California 1959/1962 Scenery Released

Recommended Posts

Hi all,Well, Mike Stevens and I have finished. After many months of work we have completely redone the CA59 scenery using GMAX terminals for 15 airports (the ones we had photos). Please keep in mind that this is a scenery that has detailed terminals for 15 airports, and is not constructed to the kind of detail as your favorite payware airport, or even single airport sceneries. We definitely used the theory of "good enough" when building this scenery. That said, the increase in realism over the original version can be seen from the screen shots in this thread; we hope that you will be pleased. :)You can download it from my Cal Classic Scenery page.A few pictures. First the 1962 LAX "satellite" terminals, mostly using GMAX. Note the accurate satellite buildings, the old original jetways, and the new details scattered around:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/klax62.jpgHere is the other big airport in the new scenery, SFO. I modeled the car ramps up to the second level on the land side too:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/ksfo.jpgAnd here are two of the few medium sized airports. First, San Diego - note the pre-1967 terminal, the Convair and Ryan plants, and the gas station in the parking lot:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/ksan.jpgThe other one is Burbank, complete with the Lockheed plant:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/kbur.jpgFor the smaller airports (with airline service) the amount of detail varied, depending on what photos we had. For the ones with no photo coverage, I simply added the new light poles, airstairs, and a luggage conveyor to the terminal indicated on the charts (a default building). If we had a photo of the terminal itself, we built it. Here is Santa Barbara:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/ksba.jpgIf we had more info, we did more. Here is Santa Ana (now John Wayne). After this shot was taken a chain link fence was added around the terminal:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/ksna.JPGAnd finally here is my home base, Sacramento:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/ksac.jpgA new feature of this version (along with all the GMAX terminals, buildings, and details) is that you can select either 1959 (as before) or 1962. This will give you different terminals at LAX, ONT, and OAK. It will also give you extended runways at LAX and SFO. Choosing is as simple as checking either the CA59 or CA62 scenery layer. Here is LAX in 1959. Note the new yellow hangars on each end, the Flight Deck restaurant in the middle with rooftop signs, and the accurate tower:http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/klax59.jpgAnd in 1962 using the famous satellites (old terminal in the background):http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/klax62.jpgOntario in 1959 (the terminal is an old barracks):http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/kont59.jpgand the new terminal in 1962 (old terminal at left):http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/kont62.jpgAnd finally Oakland in 1959 (North Field):http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/koak59.jpgand 1962 (South Field with runway under construction):http://www.calclassic.com/Temp/koak62.jpgThe 1962 KLAX even has the "This zone is for loading and unloading only" announcement playing outside the terminals on the land side.Enjoy,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Hi,Thanks for the kind words!Addon airports do not work well in Golden Wings, for the most part (unless they are designed with GW in mind). For one thing most taxiways won't show up (since Bill has you delete the taxiway texture files in your GW installation). I think it might work if you restore the textures, but I haven't tested that.Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Looks very nice Tom and Mike and thank you for bringing back such a wonderful time for flying. I have had high hopes that a future version of MSFS will utilize the time sensitive features of bgl files and allow for era correct representation of airports, landclass, etc. You have recreated a visual representation of what I remember as a kid growing up around aviation... I can almost smell the avgas! Many thanks,Zane

Wow!, that stuff looks great! I remember Orange County airport quite well. When passengers left the plane they left from the plane through a chain-length fence straight into the parking lot. Talk about your security! Ah... those were the dayz...

I have been thinking about doing a second installation on another drive for a retro fs world. I was wondering if anyone know the answers to a couple questions.1. Can I use FE, ASVE, and Active camera or multiple installations?2. How will FS9 respond if it is installed on a external USB drive? Thanks.BTW, the scenery looks great Tom and it has renewed my interest in creating a retro world.
