Can't start some aircraft in 2.5

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I can't get some aircraft started, e.g. Beechcraft and Mooney.

All checklist items followed. Engine cranks a few times but it doesn't sound like there's any ignition...

I fly RW and am pretty familiar with startup, but perhaps I'm missing something here. (Yes, fuel tanks are on/selected!)

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Andrew

Is that with Ctrl-E?

I find that with a lot of P3D recips, it helps to put the throttle at about 25 percent forward of idle during start, and of course, insure the electric fuel boost pump is on.

Even so, they can be hard to start if you're using a weather program that sets the ambient temperature to colder than about 45 degrees F, and also at high altitude airports.

CTRL-E always seems to work, unrealistic as it may be.

Hi Gregg - nope... never used it!

Hi Jim-

Tried that; also tried pump on, pump off, pump on for 5 seconds then off, 10 seconds, etc.

No weather program running.

I want to avoid Ctrl-e :)

thanks

I'm pretty much assuming you've checked fuel level, fuel cutoff switches, magnetos on, master switch, mixture and prop set...you've been here.  From my own RW experience with Cessnas and PA28s, starting can be more challenging due to flooding and the like...something I only see in A2A aircraft.  Haven't seen that in others.  How long are you turning the engine?

One thing I have found when a recip is hard to start, is that if you DO start it with CTL-E, then pull the mixture to cut off, wait until the engine stops, then immediately re-start manually, it WILL start.

I have had success with doing manual starts with the throttle pre-advanced, but at a high altitude airport like DEN or ABQ, it seems that only CTRL-E will work.

This is not the case with the RealAir Duke however. I never have an issue starting that, even when default recips will not.

Yep - you're correct. Thought of flooding in the off chance it was modeled and I didn't know it...

Even tried priming then pumping the throttle a few times.

Turning engine... ah, just a "normal" amount I guess. If you trigger it, it turns for a predetermined time, too, and that didn't work either.
