Scenery and stuttering-help in P3D.

Recommended Posts

Hey.
This is actually my first ever post here in this forum, because usually I've got all the help I've needed the last couple of years by googling my problems, and I always end up in this forum, so I've decided that it's time for me to step out of the dark, and ask a question my self.

After swearing allegiance to Microsoft and their flight simulators since Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000, I've last year took a jump over to Prepar3D, after reading a lot of positive feedbacks and reviews of that simulator.

But after spending hours, days, weeks and months on tweaking, and testing the settings to get the smoothest simulator possible regarding my computer specs, I've decided to turn of all autogen (vegetation and buildings), and also turn Scenery Density to the lowest, because I don't really need that eye-candy flying at 33 000 feet.
I use ORBX Europe and Global Vector, so I can't really complain regarding my high-altitude flying, but to come to my question.

By turning of Scenery density, I also lose all of the airports-buildings on the default airports, and that takes away the realisme while on ground taxiing before takeoff or approaching the airport for landing.

So I wonder if there is a possibility to have the airport-buildings visible, without getting all the other buildings (city skyscrapers, etc)?

The reason I wonder, is because of my FPS, the airport-buildings have no impact what so ever on my fps, but as soon as I takeoff, as an example, from KJFK, flying over New York, or other big cities for that matter, my FPS drops way low, and major stutters occur, but I don't experience any of that with the scenery density turned off.

Even though I thought my computer would be good enough for FSX or P3D when I bought it a year ago.

I also have one other problem, at the start of a flightplan, taxiing and takeoff, I usually don't get any stutters, with FPS steady at 30 FPS, but after between one and three hours of flight, when I come back after eating dinner or watching a movie or something, P3D stutters like crazy, with FPS fluctating between 1 and 20, and when I click on the setting-button, P3D just close down, and I end up back at my desktop.
Anyone know what could be the problem?

Addons I use, and system specs is listed down below.

Tessellation is turned of, as I didn't see any terrain-improvements with it turned on, and I've put my monitor refresh rate to 30Mhz, via Nvidia Control Panel, and Vsync and triple buffering turned on in P3D-settings.

PS: I really don't know if I publish this at the right place, but keep in mind, this is my first post here, and I hope I've described my problem as best as possible.
Btw, it's sad that flight sims are so addictive, since I use to much time with the settings, rather then fly a stutterfree trip.

Addons:
ASN & Aivlasoft (on a remote computer).
Aerosoft Airbus A321
ORBX Open LC, ORBX Europe and ORBX Global Vector.
Radar Contact.
FSPassengers.

System Specs.
Windows 10, x64-bit.
Intel Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz (non-k, so overclocking is out of the picture, but with turbo-boost on 4.0GHz)
Hyperthread turne
Nvidia GeForce GTX 770, 2GB memory (Driver 364.51, haven't installed the latest driver yet, 364.72).
20GB Ram.

Btw, my Affinitymask is set to 84.

Best regards
Erlend Falck :)

Upgrade your GPU to at least a GTX 970, turn Tessellation ON and crank your sliders back up.

P3Dv3 is a very different beast compared to FSX - it needs a strong GPU.

Also try running without an affinity mask, P3D v3 is far more capable of running over multiple cores with no tweaks.

I know, but right now money is a little bit of a problem, so I can't upgrade my GPU quite yet, I actually been flying with tessellation of, turned it off just today and took a short hop from Miami to Havanna, but I never really understood what tessellation does, but actually I have never experienced any stuttering problem by using tessellation, so I might turn it back on later today.

I've tested both without affinity mask, and with affinity mask on 84, 254 and 255, reason is that I read that you gotta use affinity mask if you have hyperthreading on...

It's not a must but generally results in smoother performance. Try using 116 instead of 84. Also the problem you depicted seems to be memory related. Do you monitor your VAS usage? Last thing is GPU related settings, you may want to try with reduced MSAA or SGSS if you use that.

I don't use any MSAA or SGSS, at least I don't think so, I don't use Nvidia Inspector, only Nvidia Control Panel, and the only settings Ive changed there is from multi-monitor performance till single monitor-performance, and maximum performance for power.

I only monitor my computer with task mananger, but that is just the CPU, not the GPU (never figured out which program I can use to monitor my GPU).

I'll try that affinitymask 116, but my problem is that, on short flights my FPS is steady, but when I try to take a longer flight, example Oslo, Norway to Madrid in Spain, i flew that trip three times yesterday, never did I get the chance to land, since the flight takes over four hours, but each time, between two and three hours into the flight, my FPS went berserk, and I didn't use my computer to anything else then P3D when I tested it out.

I haven't taken that trip today, been playing around a little with my settings, but I might try it again later on, because it only seems to happen on medium/long hauls.

But thanks for the affinity-tip.

But regarding the affinitymask, my CPU has 4 cores and 8 logical once, so I don't know if affinitymask 116 is right for that, I'll try it of course, but everywhere else Iæve looked, I've only read that 84, 254 or 255 is the right one for my CPU. :P

"So I wonder if there is a possibility to have the airport-buildings visible, without getting all the other buildings (city skyscrapers, etc)?"

In the Settings-Scenery window of P3D turn your autogen vegetation density and autogen building density sliders to 'None'.  Set Scenery complexity to Extremely Dense.  That, I believe, would turn off surrounding buildings and trees off to a point but would leave airport buildings on.  It will also leave on some other buildings, for example some city skyscrapers, as they are tied together with the Scenery complexity slider also.  See if that is what you are seeking and adjust accordingly to maximize your performance.

Thank you for that tip, that was actually my next move, I was planning on testing that out, since I think I can manage some skyscrapers and other buildings.

Anyways, I gotta say that I am extremely happy with p3d, it seems like, even though I have had some problems, that p3d runs better on my computer then fsx does, and it will be quiet near perfect for my use, when I get rid of the few problems I have left :)

I use ORBX Europe and Global Vector

Bonjour,

Also made the plunge to P3D, and after  2 weeks of tweaking, I have found that Global Vector has a big impact on the performance (more than in FSX SE).

If I disabled FTX vectors the stutterring in turn practically disappears.

I have a GTX 780 and 4790K OC 4.6GHZ, but I cannot see where is the bottleneck.

Cheers

Claude

Also try without Aivlasoft EFB. It is known for stutter on a networked PC.

I also use a 8 lp CPU and 116 has been known to be the best for such. 116 is 01110100. Meaning you free up the first core for Windows and other addons while still being able to use 4 lps for 4 P3D jobs.

84 gives you only 3 therefore less processing power for scenery. 254 and 255 use too many lps and thus cause a decrease in smoothness.

By the way download the projectfly tool and monitor your VAS. Since you say the stutter and fps loss happens at the end of the flights there may be a good chance it's memory related.

I gotta thank you once more for the tip, I've changed it to 116 now, and are descending to Toronto as I write, after a flight from Miami, and haven't suffered a single stuttering while airborn, usually it starts after about two hours of flight, but now it seems like I finally have the chance to put my plane on the ground for once :P

I'll download the projectfly tool after I've landed, don't wanna risk screwing up my approach, I also ended up staying put with my settings, since I usually fly at 33 000 feet, I don't really need all that extra scenery loading while airporn, and I can live without airport-buildings, the airports I have installed from Aerosoft works without a problem, and the default airports ain't good looking anyways.

I also changed my monitor refresh rate to 24MHz in Nvidia Control Panel, it works without a delay and without any stutters it seems, but I really don't know how good that will be though, regarding scenery loading.

I also have testet different settings with Global Vector, turning off things I don't think I gonna need while flying high, but it sucks, having paid so much for it, and it gives a better realisme into the simming-world, so I really don't think I can fly without it :P
