Hi all,

I'm looking into finally upgrading my i920@4.2 rig. This CPU has lasted me over 6 great years but alas the time has come to jump on the 6700k/Z170 band wagon.

I want to go with 32GB memory primarily for (future proofing) X-Plane and P3D and gaming. Looking to go with DDR3400 just for the added overclocking headroom.

Would I be better off going with 2 dimms or 4 dimms?

32GB (4 X 8GB) DDR4 3400 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231917&ignorebbr=1

or

32GB (2 X 16GB) DDR4 3333 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232295

Will be using one of the Asus motherboards, haven't decided which one yet. Micro Center currently has a great deal on the Asus Z170-AR for $109.99 with CPU Combo, but the GSkill QVL doesn't show official support for compatibility with that particular MB.

Thanks for any opinions!

Fill it up with the four of them - that should be sufficient enough - that is what I have done - you want to buy them in groups also as the remaining two open lanes at a later date that ram might not get along together

Go with 4 x 8 no problem to to start with 2x8 if you uppgrade later the only important is that is same type of chip , ex samsung b-die

The match kit Is kind of myth.

Give you an example run 2x8 samsung b-die one stick TridentZ 3733 second ripjawsV 3200

You can run XMP från the mem in slot 1 , Put the 3200 stick in slot 1 XMP from the 3200 0n booth

Then TridentZ 3733 slot 1 XMP from trident works if you get a good 3200 stick.

16GB is plenty to be honest. You don't need 32.

Hasse... I understand that that all four slots populated no longer limits overclocking as much, due to the improved topology. Can you confirm that, have you found that to be the case, or is it still advantageous in some respects to just populate two slots?

Yes Its still the case, 2 X 8 is optimal for Skylake harder to get 2 x16 work not big diff if you go with 2x16 or 4x8 both put high strange on the memcontroller.

The samsung b-die fly can run 2 X 8 at 4000mhz 12-12-12-28-1T-220

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will go with 2 x 8 (16gb) memory and when or if I need to upgrade, hopefully won't have any problems matching the set.
