FSX Blurry Ground Textures & Affinity Mask not working properly

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I've been trying to tweak my FSX recent to try and minimize the blurry distant ground textures.

I have just updated my graphics drivers, to the latest from nvidia and that helped with the anti-aliasing but not the ground textures.

I have affinity mask 84 set in config, but whenever i start FSX it's selected to use all the cores.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/apvt0mnqqqhpd05/FSX%20Affinity%20%26%20CPU%20Usage.jpg?dl=0

Here is the processor tab showing the CPU usage across the cores:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/0nefusct1f89fik/FSX%20Processor%20Tab.jpg?dl=0

Here is a photo of departure today (this doesn't actually look to bad, but I've used a new config I got from an online guide)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ya0y3276wbk4lpl/FSX%20departure%201.jpg?dl=0

If anyone on these forums could help in assisting me to get the Affinity Mask working correctly, as I have Preapar3D aswell with same AM=84 set and when I open the task manager it's only using 3 CPUs (Admitedly it's using different CPUs to what's selected but at least it doesn't select all Cores)

I see two Display devices NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

And your CPU specification?

more info need.

So I have deleted the additional video card entries.

It would appear that the textures are not crisp when taking off from an airport or looking at mountains on the ground at an airport when the weather is clear skies.

I don't have High Definition monitors I run at 1680x1050 resolution. Would that have any effect on this?

I have the i7 4790k which runs at 4.4ghz.

With AM=84 set in the FSX.cfg when I open the FSX process in task manager and right click affinity, all cores are still ticked but only 3 cores/threads are being utilized and I would have thought if AM 84 I supposed to use 2/3/5 for example then that's what would be being used.

The config I have copied in, was taken from a YouTube post of someone with a lesser spec system than mine getting great results.

I have just now taken out there video card entries as pointed out here.

Would be really nice if I could get sharp crisp textures.

With 84 only three cores are utilised because it's binary value = 01,01,01,00. That means you have one Logical Processor from each of the second third and fourth cores running three sim jobs. Not the best setup you can do if you want to use three cores for the sim, instead 116=01,11,01,00 works better with three cores. You can try AM=85 to utilise four cores, but you need to ensure addons don't use core zero (LPs 0 and 1).

The reason the AM seems not to work is that FSX always shows all LPs checked in Task Manager *whatever AM* you choose, even so, the Affinity is set correctly, it's just the way FSX Works.

I would set your bufferpool entry thus:

[bufferpools]

UsePools=1

Poolsize=1024

Those AMs are for 4 core/8 threads. Four cores is marginally better than three. If you have only four logical processors then leave out the AM but still make sure addons are started away from core zero.

Four core NO HT = four threads use no AM and start addon exes with a .bat

example content of batch file starting an addon exe on second/third/fourth cores avoids core zero:

start /B "" /affinity F "C:\Program Files (x86)\FSAddon\FSAddon.exe"

Ok so I understand this correct, I have a Quad Core CPU, so your saying to leave AM out of the config, and start addons using a .bat file. I use rex texture direct to load the weather textures and start Flight Sim from there. I then use FSGRW (FS Global Real Weather) as my weather engine.

I have 4 Core HT on.

Thanks,

Yes you got it. The addon exe's to start with a bat are those that run alongside the sim, so the texture swapping program doesn't need affinity setup, but the weather engine would be good starting with the .bat file. You can drag and drop a shortcut to the .bat file. Other than starting the app with an affinity setup, it's no different in operation from starting with the original shortcut to the app found on the desktop or menu.

Since you now say you have four core *HT ON*, then you are saying you have 8 logical processors. In this case use AM=85=01,01,01,01 and the affinity setting for the weather exe would be 168=10,10,10,00 you need to specify A8 in the affinity .bat file for 168 decimal:

start /B "" /affinity A8 "C:\Program Files (x86)\FSAddon\FSAddon.exe"

...If an exe program has a setting for affinity of its own, don't start it with a .bat, set up the affinity setting of the app and let it start as it intended, as we do with FSX

The 4790K is a quad core processor. So I have 4 cores with HT on so 4 cores/4 threads. So in my windows task manager I see usage across all cores and threads.

When I was running with AM=84 there was a little usage on CPU1 & the rest spread between CPU3, 5 & 7 (which are my threads am I mistaken?).

So how does the .bat file work as I also have flight recording software that's also running aswell as fs real time.

So I would need to setup real time, weather program & the flight recorder in the .bat file to keep them off 0.

So how would I configure that would I just create a text document with the install location of each program and then the code to prevent it using core 0 and then save as a batch file.

A bit new to this (batch files) so not 100% sure.

"The 4790K is a quad core processor. So I have 4 cores with HT on so 4 cores/4 threads. So in my windows task manager I see usage across all cores and threads."

It's four cores, so with HT enabled there are eight logical processors.

"When I was running with AM=84 there was a little usage on CPU1 & the rest spread between CPU3, 5 & 7 (which are my threads am I mistaken?)."

Remember I said at first, an AM=84=01,01,01,00 which shows three logical processors utilised, there are three one's, one on each of the second third and fourth cores, namely on LPs 2,3,6.

"A bit new to this (batch files) so not 100% sure."

Check it out. Make the text file on the desktop and put in the content as in the examples, save it with .bat on the end instead of .txt. Move it somewhere logical, and drag-drop a shortcut to it onto your desktop.

...Using the common nomenclature would help save confusion when discussing CPUs. Cores are numbered 0 to 3 from right to left, and with HT enabled, logical processors are 0 to 7 with 0 on the right, two per core, so core zero = LPs 0 and 1.

OK so if I've got this correct when creating the .bat file doe the addition resources to run do I select them all as A8 for 168 affinity in the directory line.

Many thanks,

Chris

Yes that's fine Chris. Copy and modify a line for each with the proper folder and addon .exe name, A8 is ok for them all. Or create individual .bat one for each if you don't need them all to start off the same bat.

I was browsing the fspilot shop today and found FSX Extreme Booster V2.

It was only $12 so I bought it but haven't had much time to tinker with it.

Is it a worthwhile program to tweak FSX based on my system specs.
