If you're not jumping from a less than 4gb vram card, I don't think it will make difference for P3D, it will affect a lot other games / applications.
I have a Titan X and saw people with less powerful cards having basically same results, so I don't think it will have much impact.

It should have impact if for example you have a TitanX running 100% flat chat. The extra 1080 performance should drop the GPU load down and improve frames in that case. However, if your GPU is never hitting 100%, I doubt there will be much difference to anything.

I just installed 2 in one of my gaming rigs. It gets impressive benchmark performance and does very well in my 3440x1440 Ultrawide screen gaming, but had little to no impact on P3D vs the GTX980ti's that they replaced. The biggest change I had recently had in my P3D experience, was moving to a Skylake CPU. That was like night and day for me coming from a 6 core previous generation processor.

Let me guess.... you want 64bit.

I don't think you'll see much except maybe the ability to use higher AA levels and maybe tree shadowing.

My GTX970 4GB is rarely taxed by P3D and I basically max out autogen and shadows (except tree shadows).

Well, I max out my 980 Ti's VRAM with P3D on a regular bases. If you run 1080p don't even bother thinking about it. Total waste.

1440p and up with lots of shadows seriously tax the VRAM.

Good to know thank you and you beat Rob to the punch in the process

I've read numerous reports of thermal throttling. I think I'm gonna wait until third party cards with better coolers are out

I definitely want one, still on the 970 at the mo.

Reasons are:

Clouds - more clouds! (See new asn engine thread)

Turn all of those shadows up to max

4K, and multiscreen. Not sure about 4K as I may end up going 1080p projectors x3, but either way some more graphics grunt may help. And a 1080 should run two 4K monitors I think, which is my other possible display solution.

Interested in hearing any other real-world p3d experiences.

P3D basically you need to run with a GPU with 4gb or more and a CPU with higher clock per core.

It's not a 64bit engine, lots of threads and cuda cores, won't be used.

I just did a flight from SBRF to SBSV with photoreal, ASN, PMDG 738, ORBX Vector, Global, Trees, FSUIPC, FSACARS, IVAP, GSX, addon manager, ezdok, everything available.

Maxed Out on 1080p, the most vram shown on precision X was 3.1gb of vram.

I tested once base clocked and OC my Titan X for P3D, had no impact, on games, it chances up to 10fps depending on situation, but for P3D, you don't need that much power.

Evga has a superclocked version coming out with better cooling and 1708 base clock with 1847 boost for 649.00

He is absolutely right.

P3D is 70% cpu dependent and just 30% gpu dependent.

To see if you might benefit from a 1080 :

Resize your P3D window from screensize to a small window.

- If you see your framerate going up then a faster card might help.

- if your framerate stays the same a faster card will not do much

1070 is the way to go for an upgrade on the older stuff - 1080 is complete overkill to be honest unless you play other games.

Agreed, but I would wait for the benches first. If it doesn't offer too much difference over the 970 then I feel it may not justify the steeper price point.
