Authroities are looking in an area between Lake Michigan and Battle Creek, Michigan for an engine that "dropped-off" a Kalitta Air 747-100 the night of Oct 27-28. The flight was going from ORD to NYC when they developed an engine problem and elected to divert to DTW.So if you live in this area and find something that looks like a modern art sculpture inmbedded in your backyard that wasn't there last night....tell the FAA.Tim__757

Fortunately turned out better than that DC-10 departing Ohare a couple of decades ago. On that occasion damage to the leading edge flap mechanisms permitted retraction on one side. When the crew reduced speed to what the manufacturer reccomended for engine failure the wing on that side stalled and the plane rolled over. The stall problem was compounded by the stall warning system's dependence on the missing engine's generator. Emergency procedures and stall warning system redundancy were modified after that incident. Root cause of engine loss was structural damage to the pylon from the operator's improper engine installation procedure.
