Ipacs not Thinking small this time!

Well, Ipacs is certainly not thinking small!!!!! clear.pnghttp://steamcommunity.com/app/434030/discussions/0/351660338723844330/

They are proposing complete world coverage suitable for viewing from approx 20,000 feet that would total a whopping 120 gigs.

In other news, AFS 2 is rapidly approaching the 85% approval rating necessary to reach "overwhelmingly positive" Steam review status. Good going.

[Official] Need your opinion on world wide texture pack DLC

As we have announced a few weeks ago we are also considering a separate DLC with higher resolution aerial images world wide. When we talk about 'higher' here it is of course not the same level as our south west USA texture pack, but considerably lower. As a rough guideline expect to have around 30-60m per pixel.

However the main motivation for us it to basically have an almost world wide coverage with images that look good from altitudes of 20000 feet and above, so this means you should in general recognize where you are flying. Some sample images can be found here:

So what's your opinion here, would it make sense to offer a DLC like this? As a rough guideline the download will be around 60 to 120 GB, depending on if we add everything or leave out some rather boring areas.

Great news, Devon.
Not that I share their worldwide approach, but I understand that the market is putting pressure on that side and I really appreciate their efforts.

I would not purchase it being as it seems ridiculous to have to fly at an altitude of 20000 feet and above.  I wish they would make a high resolution option for the entire southwest region first and then continue with other regions.

Just out of curiosity.....does anyone know how much hard drive space would be required for the entire south western USA region @ 0.6m per pixel?

EDIT: It seems that 100,000 sq.kms would be approximately 1.1 Terabytes! A resolution of 1.2m per pixel would reduce this to around 300GB.

As for entire world coverage @ 30-60m per pixel, it would be useful for long haul jet pilots, but the resolution would need to increase appropriately around large airports. It would be no use having 0.6m per pixel airport coverage right next door to this low resolution scenery. A series of gradually improving resolution areas would be required as the aircraft reduced altitude on approach.

As Christopher writes, this apporach does make sense for airline pilots. It would requite, though, high-detailed airports with a higher-resolution surrounding. Plus navigation like VOR in-between. Which I hope 3rd parties will provide one day. Something like Aerosoft's mega or holiday airports would be a perfect fit.

Kind regards, Michael

I think global navaids are already included. It's just a matter of increasing the texture resolution. While worldwide textures are already included, you need to fly at about 100,000 to 150,000 feet for it to look sharp. Unfortunately, they haven't included any space ships in the sim.

This will primarily be interesting to airline pilots, and they obviously need to have more high-res regions before it makes sense. For those who enjoy low and slow, there also needs to be more seamless high-res coverage.

A good application I would like to give to Aerofly FS would be to drive the visuals of Aerowinx PSX, just as I am doing now with P3D v3.3.5
