AS16 weather engine any improvement over ASN

Recommended Posts

I have been reading the forums with hit and miss answers. I'm interested in AS16 without ASCA. I plan to use my current Rex Textures and wait for Rex Sky Force 3D to be released. In the mean time my question is does AS16 provide an improved weather engine over ASN?

Hi,

How about trying the free trial and deciding for yourself with no risk?  http://www.hifisimtech.com/downloads

I'm thinking about it but I was looking for feedback from someone who is already using it. Did I read correctly, I can install ASN and AS16 and they will not cause problems with each other? I read someone installed AS16 and it reset there ASN settings. I may just install AS16 on my client so not to interfere with ASN on my FS machine.

Yes they run independently.  There's no settings reset.  There will be some components updated when you run it (the ASConnect install process) between versions, but that only takes a few seconds.

Thanks Damian. Looks like I will give it a try.

Based on my experience today, yes. I flew injected weather for my neck of the woods, which was turbulent and convective. My little Piper Cherokee got tossed about like a leaf. Convective effects were nothing like this in ASN, at least for me. The engine even quit and I had to perform an engine-out landing on a local highway. It was great.

Note: I kept my REX Soft Cloud textures.

Is this for P3dV3.2 or later only? I have 3.1 working so nicely I'm reluctant to go to the next version.

Yes much better. ASN can't hold a candle to what I'm seeing out my windscreen with this and ASCA. Coming into KATL earlier today with some crappy wx in the area, the visibility improvements, cloud shadows in P3D, etc... Wow.. I actually said this is the most realistic feeling I've ever had...

Has anyone noticed a performance hit compared to ASN, or is it about the same?

I haven't noticed any neg impact on performance compared to ASN, it's the same or better in performance.

AS16 so far appears to be very good. Performance (only tried in FSX so far, but I did also buy it for P3d), compared to ASN seems to be better, it's definitely no worse, but I do feel it runs weather depiction, especially in rain and stormy weather smoother.

performance with 4xsgaa?

cheers

mike

My findings above were with 4xSGAA. Performance seems slightly smoother than ASN with same settings.

I find AS16 a vast improvement. Better coverage (overcast is now overcast - never seen that before) and a great improvement in FPS and performance, given the coverage density it displays.
