Where is P3D default flight data stored, exactly ?

Recommended Posts

I should know this, but found out last evening apparently I don't. Somehow in trying to save a default flight last night ( with the 737 ngx which I found out is not advisable), my default flight became corrupted. This caused an instant crash of P3D on startup. I normally had my P3D start at the launch scenario screen, so I am not sure what exactly happened. Now I was faced with finding out where exactly the default flight file  is stored, and secondly, what is the easiest way to fix the problem. I finally got everything working again by going to my Macrium reflex backup drive and copying some files back into P3D, but I changed a couple of things, and today, I am not quite sure exactly how I fixed it, but it is fixed and working normally again.

My question is, if this ever happens again, what is the easiest and most straightforward way to remedy this  problem? I Googled the topic, but couldn't seem to find an answer that pointed me to the exact location of the default file(s), and the exact procedure to repair this problem.  Need some expert advice.

If you are running Win 7, flights are saved in your "My Documents" folder, in a sub folder called (approximately) "P3D Version 3.x files" (I'm not at my computer, so I am going by memory, but if you look at My Documents you should see the folder in question.)

My suggestion would be to look in this folder to find a previous saved *.flt file that you know worked correctly. Then, open your P3D.cfg file with notepad, and scan through it until you find the line where the corrupt flight is saved as your default starting flight. Just change the name of the file to the one you know was working OK, save the modified P3D.cfg, and restart the sim.

Alternatively, you can just delete the current P3D.cfg file, and a new one will be built the next time you run the sim. The only problem with doing that, is that you will have to reselect all of your default graphics, scenery, weather and AI settings, just as you did when you first ran P3D after initial installation.
