- Mesh "tearing" - can you please help ! -

Friends...Something new has popped up on my FS9. Since last week I have noticed "tears" in the terrain mesh. This tearing happens at the borders of the polygonal-area that "follows" the airplane (FS9s distance-rendering method?):http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v630/Thr...scr003Small.jpgThis has never been present in my sim before, it came out of nowhere.I use FS Global (FSG), FS Genesis mesh for the USA along with some other freeware meshes scattered around the world (higher-res than FSG).The "tearing" appears worldwide.Have any of you encountered this problem before and if so...how did you manage to fix it? Its spoiling my pretty meshes :(Advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks for the reply Jim. Interesting point. But heres the puzzling part - this problem is very recent (a week old). Prior to that I was never seeing this "tearing". All the different meshes I have were co-existing. All of a sudden this popped up http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/fragend/...-smiley-001.gifIts not permanent so thats a good thing but it still spoils the simming experience! The tears last about 30 to 60 seconds, then when FS9 redraws terrain after that they vanish. They reappear about 10 minutes later.*Scratches head*

Hi Nevin,I suspect you have changed the TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS= paremeter in your FS9.cfg (TERRAIN section) to a value greater than 3.9. Doing so will increase the likelihood of these blue slivers unless you have a "buffer" mesh file made from the same data source as the high-res mesh. Those tears show up at the transition from one level of display detail to the next (it's NOT the boundary between two adjacent mesh files). FS automatically switches to lower-LOD mesh display at increasing distance from the user aircraft. In doing so it will not edit the detail of the high-res mesh but rather load the available mesh of the next lower LOD. If you don't have buffer mesh files then the elevation differences along the boundary between the high-res mesh to the low-res mesh can be significant and FS won't cover the resulting cliffs with textures, leading to those sky-blue slivers.A higher setting of TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS (default is 2.5 according to http://fsinsider.com/support/tweaks_faq.htm ) increases the "sharpness" of this transition. Thus, if you don't have buffer mesh files try reducing the value to 3.9 or less.Cheers, Holger

Im eager to have this fixed and will jump back on here to let you know how it went!BTW look at my FS9.cfg terrain section (do you see a problem lol)!:-----------------------------------------------TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=70.000000TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=3TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=5310729809160135300000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.000000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=5311050939532259500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.000000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=1020-----------------------------------------------Wierd! I also use the FSGenesis 38DEM Mesh. I recently got the buffer mesh that is now being sold there. It covers the entire world with LOD 5/6/7 buffer mesh, and iirc it was $9.99. It helped to alleviate the blue sliver problem to a great extent, but I can't say that it was an absolute 100% cure.I'm not positive but I think after I first installed it I didn't see one blue sliver at all. Then more recently I noticed there was some blue slivers here and there, but not anywhere near as bad as I used to have them before I got the buffer mesh. I think it may have something to do with the 'in-between season changes' occuring in FS2004 right now. Perhaps when it fully turns to winter I won't see any blue slivers at all again. My current setting is TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=8.000000Regards,OneTinSoldier

Thanks for the input OneTinSoldier. I remember coming across buffer mesh and never really understood what it was for...now I do! The question for me remains however: for a year and a half I had never encountered this problem - it came out of the blue (no tweaking was done to FS9). Its almost as if the mesh thought "lets have some fun and cause some trouble!"
