737/777 FMS & Diversions.

Recommended Posts

Hello:

Was wondering if somebody could please explain the programming steps for the 737 & 777 FMS when diverting.  Just for simplicity say KJFK to KLAX and divert to KDEN.

And what about if we made it to KLAX but need to divert to our ALTN KONT.

Thanks!

Need more information like the KJFKKLAX route such as RBV J230 SAAME BRNAN Q42 IRK KK60G KK57C KD51Y KD45U KD42S KD39Q PGS RIIVR3. Where you intend to switch the destination from KLAX to KDEN and the route from there to KDEN.

Aviation is not all formulaic, as many assume.

If you're diverting, there's usually a reason, and that reason is usually a lot more urgent than would allow for a bunch of "oh hey, let me hand-jam an off-the-cuff flight plan into this thing," or is already planned. If an alternate is significantly far away, you might have a planned alternate route. In the case of LAX/ONT, though, you're probably just going to get vectored, or assigned a quick handful of waypoints that would be pretty easy to enter in.

At the very least, though, you'd want to change the DEST airport on the RTE page for easy access to the approaches. In a 737, though, you could - at least in theory - completely ignore the FMC and fly on raw data if you wanted to (you can fly raw data in the 777, but you'd have to enter the frequencies on the NAV RAD page, so "completely ignore" wouldn't be accurate).

This was a planned diversion before ever leaving New York. This Hollywood screenwriter slipped the Captain and First Officer $25000 each for declaring a medical emergency (fake) a couple hundred miles southeast of Denver.

Checking weather and fuel for planned alternate is obviously important for starters, then input or line select against desired diversion airport in FMS ALTN page, select DIRECT, OFFSET or OVER 'XYZ' options, select DIVERT NOW and execute. Then you have to consider whether you need to burn off or jettison fuel if you're overweight, then setup nav aids/minima/VREF/autobrake etc. for planned approach and then perform the briefing. I think that's your basic outline, but Kyle's always more on the money with these kind of questions.

**Edit: That's the 777 I'm on about, by the way**
