Windows 10 Anniversary (1607) Update experience

Recommended Posts

Guest

I installed Win 10 Enterprise 1607 on two of my PCs (work/test PC and Flight Sim PC).  Happy to report that both survived the experience.

Used two different methods to update, work/test PC I downloaded full Enterprise 1607 and just ran the Setup.exe and upgraded.

On my flight sim PC, I let Windows Update do the upgrade to 1607.

Results:

1.  Cisco VPN Client was disabled, fair enough this Client is a known security vulnerability (there is a possible hack to work around it being blocked by Win10, but 50/50 success and requires reg editing).  I purchased a VPN router (linksys LRT224) that will be my VPN (probably should have done this a long time ago since Cisco VPN EOL in 2015 with no support).

2.  Silverlight developer runtime would not longer work in VS 2015, had to manually uninstall my current Silverlight developer runtime and download a new one from Microsoft and install it.

3.  nVidia SLI mode was reset to some unknown state, required bringing up NCP and selecting an option to recover the SLI state

4.  Reset my prefered/default audio device to my 4K Sony monitor (my default audio device was my MOTU audio interface - USB based), had to reset that back my MOTU and reboot.

5.  P3D v3.3.5 didn't see some of my USB device, not sure why, the OS reported them ... anyway, rebooted and started P3D again and everything was fine, all devices working.

6.  GoFlight - need to run GFWindows8Fixer.exe (Run As Admin)

Performance:

1.  In desktop mode, Windows seem to drag/activate much faster ... before I had a delay when doing click and hold (drag operation) often resulting in NOT dragging the window, this issue seems to be fixed.

2.  In File Explorer, right click context menu no longer has a delay (external devices, NAS, USB drives that may be in sleep mode) when showing it's context

3.  The overall desktop open/closing windows etc. seems a little more snappy

4.  After running my P3D test loop, Fraps time frame data 50% fewer long frames (>40ms) - this was unexpected - unfortunately there were two variants, nVidia 368.81 and Win10 1607 compared to my prior test results

So overall there were a few bumps, all of those bumps I've been able to resolve and I seem to be get far fewer long frames (often called stutters) in P3D.

I'll chalk this down as a positive result even if the 1607 update brings NO new features I care about, Microsoft has addressed some of the usability issues and seems to have improved performance (at least on the desktop side).

Cheers, Rob.

You're lucky. It won't even install on my Win 10 Pro box and it's tried about 3 times already. iOS, Android and Apple OS have no problems automatically upgrading their OSes on a wide variety of devices without disabling and messing with everything. To bad that MS can't figure that out.

OSX has been and will be my favorite desktop OS ... but at 7% market share it doesn't appear to be the choice for many, too bad, it really is the best OS ever produced IMHO.

Have you tried to download the full version of Win10 Pro?  Pro is paid version not free?  Install from full version, sounds like you have something blocking the install process ... anti-virus maybe?

Cheers, Rob.

My experience is unfortunately not the same other than some USB issues I'm getting many half second stutters than I didn't have before with my fps bouncing all over.  So far I have been unable to resolve the cause.  P3Dv3.3.5 was running beautifully before the update.

I'm on the verge of reverting back to the previous W10 version.

It broke Ultimate Traffic 2 in P3D for me. Unfixable with multiple reinstalls and registry massaging.

Trashed my win 10 install so had to reinstall and now it seems fine except for when it shuts down and reboots the pc every once in awhile even when just sitting idle at the desktop.

Pro is paid version not free?  I

No, the free version of Win10 came as an upgrade to match whatever flavor of Windows  (7 or 8.1) was installed previously, either Home or Pro.

Give this a whirl Rob. Running it here myself. Two 980 Ti's in SLI:  http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=409112

My flightsim computer is for nothing more than flightsimming and downloading software for it. Not going anywhere near this W10 update. In fact I have shut off updates for it. Not messing with something that isnt broke!

While it ain't broke, why not make it better.  What I never understood about this community is the fear of new technology. I've been working in IT professionally for a long time now and whatever hiccup there could be is typically sorted out in short order. (if possible) I fix it myself. Most people you see with solid running sims also have a good background knowledge of a PC as well. Reading never killed anyone.
