Windows 10 Anniversary (1607) Update experience

It broke Ultimate Traffic 2 in P3D for me. Unfixable with multiple reinstalls and registry massaging.

I've just installed the win 10 update (Pro versions)on 3 computers , with no worries -  I intended purchasing UT2 this weekend prior to the update, but now I'm having second thoughts because of your post. Can you tell me if you installed UT2 using 'Poppets' guide in these forums or did you use the Estonia migration tool and is your Prepar3D v3.5?

Define registry massaging and broke. Did you check the simobjects.cfg to make sure the 1) it was numbered correctly. 2) that UT2 aircraft is present. Since It works fine for me.

Yup. I know how to uninstall and reinstall it in P3D - done it a few times. First run of P3D after Windows update gave a message about UT2 it not being registered. I have a registered copy so I uninstalled and reinstalled using the wrapper. Then it gave messages about sim not being shut down properly and to restart PC each time I started P3D. Uninstalled and reinstalled UT2 several times, deleted all references in registry etc. Still got the same. it was working okay in P3D 3.5 prior to windows update.

 

I researched that message which can also occur in FSX but there is no clear solution. If you have no problems then good luck to you. I've moved to MyTraffic6 and will try AI Controller.

No problem with the Anniversary update here. However, for some reason it disables System Restore which you probably wouldn't notice until you needed it!

Installed the upgrade about a week before the deadline.  Unplugged, rebooted Win7 x64 then replugged all my hardware USB's before upgrading to Win10 and everything but networking went off without a hitch.  Had to delete homegroup settings in order to link both PC's again.  Loving this round of Win10 upgrade right now, P3D seems to run smoother and is more stable.

Just wanted to report back that running the GoFlight GFWindows8Fixer.exe fixed my USB issues with my GoFlight modules and the stutters I was experiencing.  Thanks Rob for reminding me to run that!  All good now with the Anniversary update,

Poppets method is essentially what the migration tool does but more thorough. I would follow her method to check it over.

I did a fresh install of Win10 Pro 1511 on a new machine, then let MS upgrade to 1607 before I reinstalled P3Dv3 and merged back my addons from a previous install. All went more or less nice and I am happy as can be with the performance and the stability.

The only minor annoyance comes from the UAC (which I do not want to turn off); but whenever I launch an application as admin from the Explorer the respective UAC dialog doe not pop into the foreground automatically. I need to click into another program window (or onto the desktop) and then click back to the Explorer which brings the dialog to the front. Alt-Tabbing to the dialog does not work ... interesting at least...

Just to clarify, UAC OFF simply turns user warning message down (it's never completely off) ... it does NOT reduce OS security.  Windows defender will be running unless you have some other anti-virus/malware software installed.

I used the EMT to install UT2 back when I had P3D V3.0, I am now on V3.3 and with the latest WIN 10 update and all is well. Everything works.

If the UAC slider is fully down at "Never notify", doesn't that mean that any program can run without my authorisation or, in the worst case, without me knowing about it? I don't use Defender.

My Windows 10 Anniversary (1607) Update experience has been faultless so far, and I don't expect any problems to rear their head now, having been running it since its release day; meaning I've run almost all the app's and games I have on my system without encountering a single issue. I also took the updated nV driver version 369.09 which has also worked without fault so far. I don't benchmark anymore, and in the case of P3D & FSX don't even run the fps counter, so I can only go on how my sims feel in use, and as far as I can tell there is no discernible change, and certainly nothing negative. One absolute positive for me is boot times to a usable desktop has almost halved since updating to the Anniversary Update. My initial update from Win7 to Win10 did slow my PC' s boot time, but this build now exceeds my previous Win7 installs boot time by a large margin.

 

I know all this is useless info as for as anyone else goes, but I wanted to add another positive Win10(+ Anniversary) experience, despite updating from an old and very full Win7 install.

NO, absolutely not!  They are notifications ... your user account is still under the same security context it always has been.  

 

Programs can't run without you starting them ... for example suppose you purchased a 3rd party add-on and initiated the download of the product, this product will not automatically start installing regardless of your UAC settings.  You must double click the file or right click and run as admin in order to start execution ... at this point, you will NOT get a UAC notification (if you have UAC turned "off") ... but since you initiated the execution you are obviously aware and hence no need for UAC notification.

 

99.9% of the danger of virus/malware comes from web sites, specifically torrent sites and/or pirate sites and/or other dubious web sites.  This is where you need to make sure your internet Browser of choice is up to date (i.e. not an old version) and has been configured with adequate security to prevent unsafe downloads and executions - this is where you are notified (regardless of UAC settings).

 

As far as executing programs with your input (i.e. double click on executable or msi, etc.), Windows Defender or other AV software will check to see if the file has a known virus signature before allowing it to execute.

 

Under Windows 10 you can't really turn off Defender (you can temporarily turn it off but it will turn itself back on at a later time) ... the only time it will turn itself off is if you install some other 3rd party anti-virus/malware product.
