Windows Seven not updating

Well.... have tried everything listed here, and still W7 will not update. 

 

This is what finally worked for me... have used it on several installs with different hardware (Intel and AMD).

Go to the bottom of solution #1 and download the 8 KB's directly from their website (rather than MS's tedious and convoluted downloading schema), then install as directed by the KB's.

Did some clean w7 last week, latest rollup did the trick

july 2016 rollup for windows 7

I used to let Windows 7 update automatically, and I was quite happy to let it sort itself out. Then along came KB3177723 (the Egypt Daylight Saving Time update), and it stopped my PC from booting up! It took me ages to get rid of it, and since that day I have stopped updating Windows 7 altogether. I really do not have the time to mess about correcting "glitches" like that.

 

 

Bad idea Chris. You are effectively leaving your system vulnerable to attack. 

Yep same here,  I reinstalled Windows 7 a while back. Windows did Install some Updates but from previous experience i knew i was still missing at least 100 or more "Important" Updates as apposed to "recommended" ones,  I done all the Usual,  Installed the Update Agent,  I left my computer on and searching for Updates for over 24 hours and still nothing.  I lost interest then and forgot about it.  A couple of days later and not even searching for Updates they appeared "ready to Install"  and that was that

 

 

This is my sons PC I should mention, not my PC. But the interesting thing is that an old PC I used just for the internet [now decommissioned] had the same issue. 

 

For now, I've just left auto updates on to see what transpires, so we shall see.

That's a fair point, but I am concerned that KB3177723 will be downloaded again, the system will try to install it, and then I will end up with a PC that does not boot up! If you have a solution to this dilemma, please let me know.

On W7, you can set Windows Update to hide certain updates I recall.

 

I would turn auto update off and then check manually each month. The dodgy one should be ignored if you hide it. You can always run down the list to ensure it's not there. Or if it is there, untick it. 

 

Having said that, I would imagine they've fixed the issue by now. You'd have to research to confirm that. But essentially, fixed or not, you don't need this particular update so don't install it.

I will manually check which updates are available. However, since I have not seen any other reports of KB3177723 resulting in PC boot problems, I rather get the feeling that there was no issue to correct for the wider community. Therefore, that particular nugget of joy will never be installed on my PC :smile:

You don't need it anyway Chris. So yes, nuke it if there's any doubt. In fact fire up your Elite Dangerous Vulture and blast it with your pulse cannons. That's what I'd do.

Strange thing is that my W7 64bit on my PC is either slow to get updates or other times does not seem to find any, but my W7 32bit on the laptop is still getting loads of updates every week.

Almost as is MS wants to force everybody with W7 64 onto W10, they wouldn't do that, would they ? :smile:

Yes,  It was Very frustrating to spend hours Reinstalling a nice new windows 7 and Not be able to get all my Updates,  As you said give it a couple of days and hopefully they will come

well..or it could just mean they've been making more changes to the 32-bit version lately.

 

i've seen quite a bit of patch activity the past few weeks on my 64-bit desktop and on my work machine as well.. who knows maybe you just got lucky..  honestly i don't think there's much evidence of a plot here. and anecdotal evidence isn't much to go on, somebody could maybe dig up a list of all the updates but i would be surpised if they do many patches that are specific to 32 or 64.

 

and anyway i think they made it pretty clear they want everybody to switch, that's why they made win10 free haha! 

 

i think most of the holdouts like me who haven't switched yet are probably not going to, for whatever reasons, so i don't know what they would gain by discontinuing support now after they already stated they would support it through 2020. with their previous versions they stuck to their announced schedules so i don't see why they'd modify that either.

I've had none, for a couple of months. And it's not just a case of searching but none available. Updates are available, but on my system it searches for them for hour after hour after hour to no avail. Same on my second PC. Same for others with this issue.

Great news.

 

I thought I had them all but apparently not. I was missing four. installed the rest and all well.

 

Found updates quickly and installed without an issue.

I found that link independently too. It worked on my Acer Win 7 Pro laptop but my two W7 Home Premium PCs were fine.
