How to achieve such smooth panning?

Recommended Posts

Hi Ben,

Looking at your videos (Q400 FO, FSL320), I wonder how did you achieve such a smooth panning ? Is that Ezdok only or some tweaks to cfg files? Is that done with mouse or joystick hat?

Thanks,

Pierre

Hi Pierre

I have Ezdok panning enabled on my joystick hat switch and set it to a fairly slow rate with enough smoothness to dampen out the jerks when I stop. I've got better at this as time has gone on (the FO content is much less jerky than say the Cadet course) so I tend to use it when say I'm taxying to keep the mouse out of view which costs frames in FSX. It's actually a tip I learned from a pal who's a professional film editor who said that the slower the panning you do, the easier it is to watch. So many YouTube videos have people swinging the camera all over the place, zooming in and out, switching to different views etc. that it makes you feel nauseous!

Also a little trick we do now is to render out the films at 60fps. The extra frames inserted in the rendering process tend to flatten out any stutter seen in the raw footage. There's a lot of magic behind regular film making that 99.9% of people don't notice. We've stolen a few bits of it :)
