CPU going through the roof

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was approaching FlyTampa's Toronto an hour ago when my FPS dropped to a new low on final, giving me a number of ... 8. I launched MSI Afterburner to see what was going on and noticed my GPU (980ti) was at about 40% while the CPU1 usage was going through the roof. Overall CPU usage was pretty high but most of the work seemed to be coming from CPU1. Now I'm wondering why there's so much load on CPU1 while the other cores have significantly lower loads. Also I thought P3D wasn't as CPU-bound as FSX? I have an i7 2600 at 3.4.

Hello Canuck,

Am not sure about a few things that may be relevant; 1. What Operating System? 2.What Motherboard and Bios version and settings of virtual cores? 3.  Which FS Platform and series (FSX or P3D version) 4. What GPU and Driver? 5. What speed of overclock if any?

Kind regards,

My experience is that near 100% core 0 CPU use is normal for any complex scenery situation

and it is normal for the other cores to throttle back once scenery textures are loaded.

If you are getting 100% usage out in the desert somewhere that's more of a worry.

Thanks for the replies. Would it make sense to upgrade to an i7 6700k 4.0-4.2? I'm wondering if that would be a significant difference to what I'm currently using...

While on final for 24R at Montréal I got 12FPS which makes a precise landing somewhat tricky...

Note with a 6700k, you will also need a new Z170 type motherboard and DDR4 RAM. So I guess you need to figure out if getting an extra 5-10 FPS is worth the $550-600 in cost for the upgrade.

If you're using a 2600K (versus 2600) then overclocking it would be a worthwhile endeavor.

If it's a 2600 (non-K locked-multiplier CPU) at 3.4, then yes, a 6700K overclocked to the mid 4GHz range should make a tremendous difference, especially with P3D and a 980Ti GPU.

Thanks Bob, I'm using a non-K version. The one I'm keeping an eye on has 4.0 on default with a turbo to 4.2, not sure what I can expect when overclocking. It's just risky because if I had to upgrade the cooling system perhaps as well it would become a bit of a mess.

I think you also want to force non FSX/P3D tasks off of Core0.  Steve has written a lot about this and can do it with affinity mask, however, you can use the freeware or payware version of Process Lasso

Is it possible to give a vague forcast of what kind of FPS I would get with a 6700k i7 4.0 together with my current system? I know it depends on settings too but I need to get an idea of how big the difference would be before spending the money. Approaching FlyTampa's Montréal in the NGX at daylight with few clouds gives me about 12 FPS.

Using an i7-4790K at 4.6GHz and a pair of 980Ti GPUs (which lope along at 30-40% ute rates without heavy clouds and/or 4xSGSS) I just flew an approach in the NGX holding 30 fps (with occasional drops to the high 20s) into FT's CYUL in P3D.  I am using a 4K display synced at 30 Hz)  If you modestly overclock a 6700K to ~4.4 Ghz you should be able to do the same, except perhaps in heavy clouds or with aggressive AA settings.  With a lower res monitor, even better.

I just flew an approach in the NGX holding 30 fps

I'm okay as long as it stays above 20. If I do have heavy clouds I would still get more than 20 I presume?

Anyway, thanks for your input, I shall be off to buy that new CPU shortly...
