Lukla/Nepal and the fear factor

Recommended Posts

I knew that once the Do-228 was out, Lukla had to be one of the logical destinations. The landing strip is built on the steep incline of a hillside. Its length is 527m, width 20m and the runway inclines an amazing 12 percent. No landing aids are available!

Landing in Lukla leaves no room for errors. As a pilot you have to throw your propellers into hard reverse before you touch down, if you don’t want to end in the wall at the end of the runway.

There is a big hill right behind the landing strip. The pilot also needs to clear a high ridge, bank left. Descend steeply, straighten your plane and try to land. Navigation is by sight only.

Oh and if you come in too high, you’ll end up in the wall. If you come in too fast, you’ll end up in the wall too.

If all of this sounds terribly exciting, go for it.

May the fear factor be with you

Do you have the Thai creatiions VNKT KAtmandu? The FSX version works quite well in P3D

I fly from VNKT to Lukla.

And then Aerosoft put out a pretty good Bhutan PARO Airport.. flying with the PMDG 737 or the Aerosoft Airbus into this and landing on runway 18 is absolutely one of the best. experience.

Hi Manny, I don't have Katmandu, but I have Bhutan. I did a flight into Paro recently with a Tupolev Tu-114. Quite an experience

Yes, HL, you are right

Great mountain flying action, Bernd.

How about your next flight going to Everest base camp. You could fly the Mi-8, and HLJames would see an Everest picture.
