Finally found a solution on the freezing problem with the 777

Recommended Posts

Hello

First of all I would inform about my system setup:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel Core i7 3770K
32GB Dual-Channel DDR3
Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H
3071MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti
232GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO
ASUS Xonar DGX Audio Device

FSX
PMDG 777
Active Sky Next
PRO-ATC X

I been trying to find out why the 777 freezes during flight. (Sim freezes, sound goes in a loop).

I have done a lot of flights with different parameters in the fsx.cfg.

The parameters which I used was found in various forums and webpages.

In the beginning I did believe that the VAS memory usage limit was exceeded, but that was not the case.

For a couple of days ago, I stumbled over some post's about "videomemoryoverride".

Things started to get very interresting during the test flights when trying this new command in the fsx config file.

I first tried a setting with 1GB, and I was able to fly for about 1 hour before it froze.

Then I used a setting of 0,5 GB or 512 MB and voila, I could do transatlantic flights which had a duration of 9 hours and still no freezing.  :smile:

In the last couple of days I have flied 3 long flights, and no freezing.  :smile:

The flights duration were:

-9 hours

-4 hours

-3 hours

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is how it is done:

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti .0]
VideoMemoryOverride=536870912

You put the line in the graphics card section.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this info can be of interest to others which experience the same problem with freezing.  :wink:

Best regards

Thanks for the information, research, and hours devoted to solution to the issue.

Obligatory YMMV. Everyone's FSX.cfg needs to be tweaked to fit their own machine.

what is "YMMV"... at least try and be professional

Your mileage may vary. Quick google search would've given you that.

And it wasn't unprofessional. Most people in the community understand that acronym or would at least google it. Instead of telling me how to do my job, it would be amazing if you'd not make it more difficult for me.

Seriously? I can't believe you said that.

Post edit: I guess I can believe it after reviewing some of your prior posts in the PMDG forum. Being rude to the staff doesn't usually yield good future results in most instances.

Im getting these freezes during task switch in P3DV3....  the sim actually continues to work, but the image is freezed up.   I have the GTX1070, last envidia drivers, win 7  64bits updated SP1 and few tweaks.

Browsing about memory overide found that its about a parameter supposed to limit the maximum amount of video memory used by your sim.... (I dont really understand this, hope someone can explain that definition).

In any case, this is what you got depending on the value you can add to your CFG file:

//VideoMemoryOverride=268435456 //0.25 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=536870912 //0.5 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=1073741824 //1.0 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=1610612736 //1.5 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=2147483648 //2.0 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=2684354560 //2.5 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=3221225472 //3.0 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=3758096384 //3.5 GB

//VideoMemoryOverride=4294967296 //4.0 GB

What are those Gbs?   Vcard memory...or...

Im going to test and see what happens....

Sounds crazy that limiting your video memory could actually improve things.

Hope someone more expert can explain what is that for....  for the while... still testing...

Not necessarily. The amount of data being transferred could be the cause of the freezes.

So that "VideoMemoryOverride" is the amount of data that it is tranferred through...?   mmmm

I read that memory override line its about telling P3D what is the amount of memory of your graphic card.  So, what is the amount of memory available.

Im not expert about it, just asking how is that really going to help.  Now, if my Vcard (NGX 1070) is 8GB, am i going to limit it?....   I will use the 8GB in that case....

So 8 x  1024x1024x1024 =  8589934592???  Or is it a 32bits...i can only use 4...bla bla bla..?

Well...  bit confused, testing today again.

"VideoMemoryOverride"

That's true but it would seem like a situation where the cure should be worse than the disease.

Like running a 4K monitor at 800x600.

Ok it's smoother but where has all the other information gone.

hello,

I am also having this problem, and it can't be the autosave function of FSUIPC, since I don't use the full version; only the demo.

I'll test the .cfg inputs as well, and I'll post when I have a result.

Has anyone mentioned the effect of Windows Update on the freezing problem? I couldn't find anything about it.

I found that, on my PC, the Windows Update causes one of the svchost.exe's Virtual Size to increase from about 220,000 K to about 2,400,000 K within a few minutes after starting the PC. When Windows Update is off, the Virtual Size goes from about 117,000 K to about 212,000 K and I no longer have freezes.

There must be a way to limit the demands of Windows Update without turning it off.

If you believe this will help with your problem, just turn updates off when flying. Go to Control Panel>Windows Update>Change Settings>Important Updates select Never Check for Updates and press OK. I use Download updates but let choose whether to install them.
