Limit fps: Yes or no?

Recommended Posts

Simple question: Should I limit my fps to 35 (at this setting, my framerate never dips below the set framerate, and the simulator feels smooth as butter), or should I have it set to unlimited to allow jumps in framerate as big as 3 digits?

There is no best answer for everyone because it depends on the system and configuration.  The big jumps in frame rate do nothing for improved animation, they just give your ego a boost.  I'd recommend you select whatever provides you the smoothest and most consistent animation with the least number of long frames.

This depends on the addon.  For VR on some planes unlimited helps and sometimes I have to lock in-p3d FPS to have high async fps.  It all depends on all the addons combined together.

I think locked is smoother. In my case I lock at 36 and it tends to stay there most of the time. Unlimited is fun to see the numbers racing, but they jump up and down a lot which bothers me.

Yeah this one is hard to pin down to just one way or the other for all.  I've tried pretty much every combo of settings out there and my system seems to always prefer to be set to unlimited to get the fewest stutters and pauses.  Obviously this is not the case for everyone as you can see from just the first few replies here.

I see best smoothness and performance when FPS are unlimited, Vsync is on, tripple buffer is on and the screen runs at 30 Hz. Looking at the Fraps counter, I have no erratic movement a t all in fps, it stays dead on 30 Hz all the time.

My system is very similar - 6700K overclocked and 980 Ti. As you know, it's not about FPS but smoothness and I have always found that setting Unlimited and not checking Triple Buffering or V-Sync has always offered the best in terms of smoothness. There is still a very small microstuttering that I have never been able to eliminate but it is so slight that I suspect to many, it would be totally unnoticeable. I am OCD. Only noticeable by looking out right or left at very low altitude and then really trying to notice it.

Not using nVidia Inspector at all. Absolutely no CFG tweaks either.

Unfortunately my monitor seems to be able to run only at 59Hz. 2560x1440 resolution.

I never fly with the FPS counter showing, unless trying to find the best settings.

P3D at Unlimited

VSync on

Monitors at 24 Hertz

DXTory limiter at 24

I use the limiter as otherwise my framerate goes : 24/48/72/96/120 - up and down between those numbers which causes small jittering

I do get some strange "warping" when I hit over 100 fps... rotten problem to have, I know

Unlimited in, set to 30 via NI

That has been not recommended by LM because there are things happening inside P3D when frame rate is locked, if you lock externally then you do not get the best performance. This is an old adage left over from prior versions, please do not propagate.

YES and NO

Rural area where framerate isn't a problem - locked

Always locked to 30, before P3D. Now run unlocked, and get smooth performance, and higher FPS.
