Approach in 1949

Recommended Posts

Hey vintage pilots!

When I fly the DC3, the Strat or other vintage birds I tend to fly it without GPS. I use plan-g as map (disconnected, without moving map). The only modern, unrealistic, thing I use are VORs with OBS.

But when it comes to approaches I am not sure how they did it back in 1949 for example.

Had they also charts, like modern star and sid but only with ndb and so on?

What about ATC, how did it work back in time?

Where there much more visual work rather than IFR?

Is anyone knowing a good Internet source for such Informations?

Thank you very much!

Low Frequency Radio Range was the prime navigation method from the 30s until the 60s and later supplanted by NDBs.

Sadly, there's no working implementation for FSX (yet?).

Thank you very much for info and links, there is also an old approach chart to see, great!

Would be great to have some old nav style in fsx.

Prior to the mid-1950's it was very primitive. Unless you can somehow create the system of navaids that existed at the time, it's pretty much a lost cause. ATC as we know it, didn't exist. Major airports had towers, and that is probably the area of greatest similarity between then and now. The majority of flying was done VFR. Enroute ATC was done with position reports, with the use of time as a means of separation between aircraft.

I like this era of flight... as a simmer. When I take a flight today, I am happy that we have modern planes and ATC :-P

How do you guys recreate this era in fsx? I fly from one beacon to the next and sometimes I connect Plan-G for the approach as moving map, but only in the vicinity of my destination (20nm or so) This sould simulate the tower.
