My FSX-SE is Possessed...

Recommended Posts

First off, my rig.  Win 10/64bit AMD FX6300 CPU 4.0 gig, ASUS 970 MB, 16 meg 2400 speed ram, 2 SSD's, Nvidia GTX 750 ti 2 gig ram. 29 inch LG Ultrawide monitor.

Ok, Have had FS9 in the past, but, laid off for several years. Built the new rig, and rekindled my love of FS.

Tried to load FS9, would not work. So, decided to purchase FSX Deluxe Edition purchase the Steam addition, because I have several other games from them. (all work great).

Steam itself is loaded on C:\, I loaded FSX and other games on the D drive. FSX installed, and ran fine. (sorta). I am plagued by what I call pop ups. Meaning, as I fly, the textures pop up. Close up, or far away. I have flown in a circle for 10 min at any given location and it is always the same. Aircraft make no difference.

So, after a month of reading this forum, YouTube vids Google hunts, have tried all the recommendations from Word Not Allowed and Ryan's Nvidia Inspector settings.  No help at all.  In addition,   the ONLY cfg change that made a difference was, WideViewAspect=True. Other than that I see no improvement at all. Still looks and acts like out of the box.

In case you are wondering, I have uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted folders per forum instructions, ran regedit to clear any misc FSX crap. I could go on and on.

I do have addons installed, but, they are not active due to this issue. (Can't wait to see what happens with those). ActiveSky Direct, REX4, Ground Environment X, FreemeshX (North America).

It almost seems like I have a secret CFG somewhere that is overwriting my changes. And yes, I am making changes to the cfg in my profile dir.

Thanks everyone.  Here is my current cfg.

I am plagued by what I call pop ups. Meaning, as I fly, the textures pop up. Close up, or far away. I have flown in a circle for 10 min at any given location and it is always the same. Aircraft make no difference.

Welcome to the wonderful world of FSX!  And all of its little quirks.  I'm thinking you may be seeing autogen trees and buildings popping up.  This is a known issue with FSX.  These things don't load in the distance as tiny objects with get larger as you approach them, they just pop up well within your visual range.

Another issue you are likely to see are the black boxes that pop up, then are replaced by the correct light texture.  Slow computers or extremely scenery intensive areas and/or extremely detailed aircraft are the most prone to seeing the black boxes linger before loading the textures.

And you may see white squares pop on land or water, or a runway will flash white as you approach the airport.  Again, this is FSX trying to load the correct texture.

You may actually see a whole lot of this as FSX uses the CPU far more than it uses the graphics card and AMD's processors, no matter how many cores nor how fast they run, never seem to be as good with FSX as Intel's processors.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Thanks so much Stan.

Appreciate the response. If you find it in your heart to buy me an Intel I7 processor, that would be great.  However, If not, I still need a bit of help with my current situation.

First of all I would not make so many manual changes to the cfg file. Delete the current cfg file and relaunch FSX. It will create a new one.

Then set up FSX from within the program. Start by setting ALL traffic to 0, then make the rest of your changes, before you slowly add some traffic to see how FSX handles it on YOUR computer. That right, don't take anybody's advice too seriously, as FSX will behave differently on different computers. I would suggest testing your settings with no weather also.

The biggest performance killers are traffic, bloom, clouds (when they're dense), autogen and shadows.

Seattle, London, New York, Paris and Tokyo are good places to test your setup for maximum performance as urban areas will tax your computer the most.

Aim for your setup to give you a steady 30 fps. In dense urban areas as mentioned above you must tolerate even less.

FYI: I run AI aircraft traffic at 20% (both), car traffic at 5% (anything above 10% kills fps in urban areas), no airport vehicles, ships and ferries 100%, leisure boats 10%. I have bloom and ground scenery shadows turned off.

To add to the already helpful advice from Simmerhead, I would also suggest that while some tweaks are very genuine and can have a positive effect, the opposite is also true. Too many tweaks, wrongly assigned can have a negative effect. What you do have in your cfg is LOD=3.5, which effectively is less than default! The lower your LOD setting, the faster your autogen will load, but it will be more obvious as it will be loading closer to the aircraft. Also, one of the biggest reasons some experience blurries and slow loading autogen/textures is running with unlimited framerates. When you run the sim with unlimited framerates, the framerates are maintained as high as possible at the expense of loading the scenery.. Lock framerates at 30. By doing so, it frees up any 'overhead' excess of performance and directs it towards loading scenery. This thread could continue forever with suggestions on slider settings and cfg tweaks. The best way forward, I would suggest, is to take everything back to default as has been suggested, and then make any tweaks at one at a time, testing and testing again, to make sure the tweak is in fact beneficial and not in any way detrimental.

There are tweaks to add to your cfg which will help, but firstly, it's important that you set the correct slider settings. Go to your FSX slider settings and follow these settings.

GRAPHICS
Untick lens flare
Untick light bloom
Lock target frame rate at 30
Make sure you're running at the correct resolution
Filtering, try lowering as much as possible to when satisfied. the lower the better performance but at cost to quality visuals.

Untick aircraft casts shadow on the ground
Untick aircraft casts shadow on itself
Untick show cockpit tooltips

Funny about that! I run an AMD 8350 with an ASUS Sabertooth mobo and R390 Strick and have 8 GB of ram and a Sandisk Extreme Pro 480 GB SSD. That along with a 1 TB WD black.

I have NO POPUPS. NO STUTTERS, NO VAS issues with Steam! I run Soft Clouds, ASN, Aivlasoft EFB, and GSX for the kids, they like to watch it!

When I ran my dual proc. FX machine I got 150 FPS in FS9. The only reason I tabled it was because it was too damn loud. I still have it along with it's 16 GB of memory and the CPU's. I'm gonna water cool it. I still have all the files to make it go, and go it will!

And by the way, rummer has it that AMD's new ZEN cpu is every bit as good if not better than Intel's best. We may have another Athlon moment coming.

And that may be the reason you have no issues.  The Steam version of FSX features some bug fixes and was recompiled, making it work better across a wider range of computer systems and components.

I am plagued by what I call pop ups

Ok, i have some suggestions for you.

First, you have 6 core CPU, so your affinity mask should be 62, not 14. FSX-SE is a great improvement over boxed version, however, they changed one thing which will cause pop-ups. In fsx.CFG add this under Scenery section:

SmallPartRejectRadius=1  (this is FSX boxed default, FSX-SE default is 4, which makes some large objects not visible at distance and poping up - some AI Traffic addons are not working with default of 4)

There are some other things - you don't need highmemfix with Steam edition and live your Lod Radius at 4.5 which is default.

I would start with fresh fsx.CFG(delete it and let FSX to rebuild it), choose your display settings in FSX menu, and close the sim. Then open fsx.CFG and add this lines:

[bUFFERPOOLS]
Usepools=0

[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=62

Under display, change wideview to true:

[Display]

UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30

WideViewAspect=True

optional:

[Main]
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.15  // try with and without

Add this lines under scenery section:

[sCENERY]
SmallPartRejectRadius=1

MAX_ASYNC_BATCHING_JOBS=4 (this is only for 6 core CPU with affinity mask 62, should also reduce pop-ups)

Also, you might find it worth the investment if you buy Steves DX10 fixer.
