Should I buy the PMDG 747 when it's released?

too big of airplane for me , i usually just make short trips with pmdg 737 or dash 8 . it would be nice if there would be a developper out there trying to make a maddog md 80 for P3D. i miss that work horse having jumped from fsx to P3D.

I was waiting for the PMDG 747 but since it will most likely be more than $100 for the P3D version I decided to pick up the iFly 747 and I'm glad I did. This airplane flies beautifully and you can feel the "weight" when hand flying. I think it is above Aerosoft's version of the Airbus. I does not have the Checklist and copilot features but it does everything else. I really think that it deserves to be caterogorized as a top add on. How much better is the PMDG version is going to be? I don't really know but I bet that it's not twice as better for double the price. IMHO.

I'm going back to FSX SE after a couple years on P3D. The addon price increase with PMDG is not worth it in my opinion. (I'm pretty sure the Q400 and Aerosoft Airbus were compatible free of charge). Not a big fan of the washed out look of P3D these days either.

 

I never used payware scenery (I'd rather spend money on planes) and never had an OOM with FSX.

 

I think I will wait for P3D to be 64bits And hoping by then they keep turning a blind eye on how people use the licenses

 

Oh and the iFly 747 is excellent.

Not into big aircraft, in fact I have gone from the Q400 and 737 NGX to A2A Cherokees and Cessnas. The idea of multi hour flights staring at an FMC with the AP doing all the flying after 400 ft  AGL, and the ground from 7 miles up, has lost all interest for me. I know airline pilots in real life  that love getting in SEL aircraft and gliders , and say that to them it is like "really flying".

Aerosoft bus is my main ride. I like the way it will hold my hand in case I am a bit lazy. I also think I would not or could not use the upcoming 747 to it's extent.

 

Had the other 747, Ifly I think, and got a refund. As a working texture artist I was not comfortable with some of it's textures.

I love my i fly 747 a bit heavy on vas though .only let down for me is the night cockpit lighting to me is abit poor far better though than when first released but still a great plane

One thing I am hearing about the ifly 747 v2 for p3d is you can't load standard premade flight plans into the fmc. In other words, if I use p3d to create a flight plan, the ifly fmc won't find it if I try to load it as Co route. If true, I don't like that.

 

And yes, imho the pmdg 744 v2 for p3d imho will be twice as good as the ifly one, though likely over twice the cost.

There is one that is making a 717 for FSX/P3D.  I had two of the guys fly online while I was controlling.  TFDI Design is the name.

I bought both the iFly 737NG and then the PMDG 737NGX.  The iFly is a solid add-on...but it was massively eclipsed by the PMDG bird when it finally released.

 

Some of the other things that I value in the PMDG add-ons beyond a lot of fine-grain system detail are:

 

  1.  A working weather radar system

  2.  A slick and fairly standard (between the PMDG birds) FMS-page based interface to doors, aux gnd equipment, fueling, load management etc.

  3.  The smoothest autopilots around

  4.  Ability to remote the FMS CDUs to iPad/android tablets using VirtualCDU

  5.  Excellent ground-handling performance

  6.  Spot-on flight dynamics performance that closely approximates the real aircraft

 

and in the case of P3D, continued responsive support for new versions of P3D as they release.

 

IMHO, the PMDG 737 is smoother and more efficient on resources than the iFly 737.  Based on what I see in the 777 that has appeared since, I'd expect that smoothness and resource efficiency to show up even more refined in the 747.  So, extrapolating my expectations out, I'd think the 747s are going to compare similarly: iFly good, PMDG best-of-class.

 

So...either way I think you'd be OK  PMDG has been in a class of their own for a long time for a reason--and they charge a premium price for a premium add-on.  Whether or not the differences that set them apart are worth the cost is something only you can decide.

IMO: If you plan on really learning the plane, then I would (reluctantly) suggest the PMDG offering. If you know you aren't going to be needing failures and complete procedures, then go iFly.

 

The reason I say reluctantly is that the P3D pricing was a bit much.

And the IFLy has every bit as complexity as the PMDG. Its a pretty misinformed statement to make that it doesn't or that you 'dont need complete procedures'. You can simulate just about anything you want. I don't find it any less of any add-on at all.  

Please learn the difference between a statement and an opinion.

From the gushing post you wrote, we can tell you are in love with the iFly. Glad you enjoy it. Others have differing opinions...

I'm currently flying the CRJ, I think you'll really like it!  But I'm a Shared Cockpit guy (along with the other OVPA guys) so we're really looking forward to the A330.  Also, the free Aerosoft A318 coming out shortly will be shared cockpit capable, so that's a boon!  Oh, and Aerosoft is going to TRY and make the CRJ Shared Cockpit capable, but it will be some time well after release (please, nobody as me, I don't know).

 

It's REALLY difficult not to love with Mathijs and the Aerosoft team does for us, and that they make every effort to keep the prices where everyone can afford excellent aircraft.

 

CAVEAT:  I'm part of the Aerosoft Team, but only as an advisor, moderator and tester.  I don't have any insight whatsoever to release dates.

First of all: I don't care at all what airline pilots love or say in this regard. Who gives a ######. I don't need an airline pilot to justify what I am doing. I fly whatever I like to fly because I like to do it. Period. ;)

But secondly: this is exactly what I love about flighsimming: you can do whatever you like to do at any given moment! I completely understand your current view on airliners because I've been there but after flying GA (A2A) for a year or so I now am completely back into the Airbus. Loving it. 'Not into GA.' ;) But... I am absolutely certain that within a few months (or years) I will be done with the Airbus and totally into GA again. I just love the diversity of flightsimming! And I love being able to do what I like without having to listen to anyone, real pilot or not. ;)

 

And btw I only fly short cityhops in Norway with the Airbus. Because I currently love airliners but never ever liked multi hour flights. Again, you can do whatever YOU want in a sim... ;)

I'm with both you guys. I reinstalled FSX SE just to fly the Maddox (the new VC is outstanding). The are a few who have the Maddox working in P3D but it isn't likely to stand the now continual graphics upgrades in P3D. I hope to have the original graphics files from the Rev soon to convert them to something compatible with P3D but I fear even that will be short lived. Keeping FSX installed is really no big deal for me and it's well worth it for enjoying one of the 2 best aircraft ever developed for flight Sim (the other IMHO is the Dash 8 Pro.

 

I was involved in the FFDI Design 717 early on, and while not the Maddog, I think it will be a solid aircraft for P3D and FSX.
