Would be much better to build a high speed train to Stanstead and expand there.  

Given how much Crossrail has cost (and how long it has taken) so far I doubt it would be cheaper to expand there. It certainly wouldn't be better from a passenger point of view. Anyway the people in the Stansted area would protest just as much, as they have in the past.

Yes, we knew about the various trains, but we were afraid there might be stairs, hassle waiting for elevators, clamoring for seats (it was a very very busy Sunday afternoon).  One time, we were on a train with bags and others were standing in the isles.  We almost did not get off because people would not move their bag or body just an inch or two so we could get by.  We really wanted to avoid that stress and hassle.   The tube from Heathrow is as least small enough that you can get near the exit fairly quickly (and we usually stay around Earl's Court).

Gatwick-Victoria is direct. Everybody gets off at the first stop !
