Cloud Shadows disappears while panning view

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Is there a fix for this problem ?  Most of the time, while looking around in spot view (in VC too), the cloud shadows disappears at some angles. If I pans back cloud shadows reappears again. I am running P3Dv3.4. I had the same problem in P3Dv3.3 too.

thanks !

Mike

that's life.

Is it ? Maybe the LM P3D team could do something about it now or for version 4 ?

I've tried to fix this too many times to count, always happens.  Just have to learn to live with it I guess.

Yes, it’s a shame. And quite annoying. Specially when you use TrackIR and look around a lot.

LM says that the purpose of disappearing shadows is to save performance. On the other hand, the dynamic lighting is evidently worth any performance cost. I would sacrifice the whole DL [word not allowed] for stable shadows without any hesitation.

Me too. And I think that LM doesn't really understand the problem. I also sometimes see shadows disappear when I just slightly look up or down...! This has nothing to do with performance: the whole feature is bugged. I can understand it if shadows behind you aren't shown but that's not what's going on here.

The problem is quite obvious when using TrackIR (and I'd assume using VR also). Manually panning with a joystick is so clunky that it's possible that LM hasn't noticed it. I'm not even sure that the cloud shadow flickering is even a programming bug. It almost looks like it's related to the structure of the clouds themselves and the way that LM calculates the angle of the cloud shadow relative to the position of the sun. It seems like there is a discrete spatial cutoff where beyond a certain point the shadow is not displayed (maybe to improve performance). This discrete on/off behavior creates a singular point where some shadows jump on and off prompted by even the slightest change in the user's viewpoint.

I've tried experimenting with shadow draw distance and other shadow parameters and it doesn't seem to be related to any of those settings.
