What if a US based airliner flies over Russian airspace?

I've seen air incidents where Russia has shot down passenger planes from the United States.

 

I know none of America's three major carriers fly to Russia. In fact, I don't think any US based airline flies to or over Russia.

But you can fly a Russian airline to America (say Aeroflot) which really confuses me. Why is that?

Yeah they do! I suggest you look at plane finder! Right now I count 13 American Airliners in Russian airspace

Yeah they do! Flights from the west coast of the USA to China fly over Russia! I suggest you look at plane finder! Right now I count 2 American Airlines, 1 United and 2 Delta over Russia

Look at the links above? What on earth made you think American aircraft don't fly over Russia? The cold war ended 25 years ago! If you didn't file a flight plan with the appropriate departments and entered Russian airspace sure you would end up with a fighter escort to a base but the exact same thing would happen if you entered just about any countries airspace unannounced

Why do you need the tail numbers?  Flightaware is a very well-known tracking site for commercial flights.

 

When did Russia shoot down multiple passenger aircraft flying from the U.S?  Only one I know of is Korean Air 007; that was in 1983.

I understand that your probably pretty young but not sure where you're getting your info but Delta flys to Moscow (Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow) but just recently cut trips to Moscow during the winter season.

thats the only one i'm familiar with also. it was actually kind of important in aviation history because it was a catalyst for making GPS available to non-military uses

Interesting!  The pilots entered incorrect waypoint data into their inertial navigation system and flew into Soviet airspace.  The aircraft, seen from below, may have been mistaken for a US military surveillance version of a 707 by Russian fighters.

I recall the two Air Korea flights as they operate close to Russian Airspace but I don't recall any US airlines shot down by the Russian's ever.

 

When Korean Air flight 007 was shot down the Americans were very tough on Russia only for the Americans to shoot down Iran Air flight 155, which the Russians turned the blame back on the USA for shooting down an airliner as well.

 

US Navy operating inside Iranian waters and shooting down an Iranian Airliner that was flying inside Iranian Airspace on its Daily Scheduled Route....not good
