What if a US based airliner flies over Russian airspace?

Recommended Posts

America flag carriers were flying into Russia even during the cold war. I knew a captain that flew for Pan Am that had flown to Moscow many times. He had some hilarious stories. He also said, you didn't deviate at all from your flight plan. They were very, very strict.

I already mentioned that above with a link.

Pretty sure Delta flies to Moscow (sheremetyevo) from Atlanta.

Russia also shot down a commercial jet over Ukraine last year.

The most likely scenario is that pro-Russian Ukranians, using Russia-supplied missiles, shot down the Malaysia 777 over Ukraine.  Not the same as Russia directly shooting down a civilian airliner, but bad enough.

More likely though, the missile battery was manned by Russian soldiers sent to be 'pro-Russian Ukrainians'. Also known as little green men.

My view is that every nation is responsible for their own military hardware and personnel and should prevent equipment and/or personnel from falling into the wrong hands. Therefore if this was the situation Russia is responsible for the actions of those involved or the negligent use of their own equipment. Unfortunate that little to nothing can be done due to where the incident happened other then scathing reports and findings.
