Fsx Tweaks Help

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody!

I just want to know if anyone can help me to tweak my FSX (Boxed edition) to get high frames and great graphics. I have a non edited cfg and no slider moved in the sim.

My PC specs:

i3 3250 (3.5 GHz)

10GB DDR3 1600

PNY GTX 750ti

AsRock H61M-VG3

My add-ons

REX 2.0 (No Overdrive)

PMDG 737 NGX

PMDG 777 with the 300 expansion

Airbus X (318, 319, 320 and 321)

FlyTampa Saint Maarten

LatinVFR Guatemala city

LatinVFR MROC

The best way of gaining performance in FSX is to overclock the processor.

God! No overclock capability and no money for a new CPU!

OK, then in that case, follow the advice from Ilya. A couple of things to remember about tweaks, is to have  a baseline to test them. 1) Create a baseline for all tests. In other words, set a specific airport, conditions and then save the flight as eg, Tweak test and use that same scenario throughout testing, and don't deviate. 2) Make one single tweak at a time and test and test again until you're happy it doesn't cause any problems and to see if there are any benefits. DO NOT introduce more than a single tweak at a time, otherwise you won't know what works and what doesn't.

The main tweak that you should consider exhaustive testing with, is the bufferpools tweak. The holy grail of tweaks if it works, and the damnation of tweaks if it doesn't! But you should really read up on this one and ensure you understand what it does. Remember, everyone's sim is different and as such each tweak will have a different effect on different rigs.

Something else to consider big time, is to ensure all your FSX settings in the control panel are correctly set before perfomring any tweaks, mainly because ticking or unticking a radio button, or reducing a slider can often have a better improvement than a tweak.

Ensure you are running at 30fps and not unlimited.

There are tweaks to add to your cfg which will help, but firstly, it's important that you set the correct slider settings. Go to your FSX slider settings and follow these settings.

GRAPHICS

Untick lens flare

Untick light bloom

Lock target frame rate at 30

Make sure you're running at the correct resolution

Filtering, try lowering as much as possible to when satisfied. the lower the better performance but at cost to quality visuals.

AIRCRAFT

Untick aircraft casts shadow on the ground

Untick aircraft casts shadow on itself

Untick show cockpit tooltips

SCENERY

TERRAIN & WATER

Level of detail medium

Mesh complexity 80%

Mesh resolution 10m

Texture resolution 1m

Water set at Low 2x

SCENERY OBJECTS

Scenery complexity dense

Autogen density normal

Ground scenery shadows ticked

Special effects detail normal

WEATHER

Cloud draw distance minimum

Thermals none

Simple couds

Cloud coverage low

Weather changes low

TRAFFIC

Airline traffic density 30 (reduce to 0 when flying from small GA fields)

General aviation density 30 (reduce to 0 when flying from large commercial airports)

Airport vehicles 0

Road vehicles 10

Ships and ferries 10

Leisure boats 10

I'm surprised you remember this post after almost a year since the advice was given.

Just repeating the best advice I ever found - avoid tweaks like the plague!

You should also read about tweaks (not recommended) and settings in the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide for the best graphics.

Best regards,

Jim

My P3dv4 worked untweaked, settings changed thru the menus, perfectly.  I use my eye to judge performance differences, the biggest hit seems to be the AA settings.  Throttle those down to smooth performance at a marginal loss of resolution.  AI also causes a big hit, I keep mine at 25 pct.  Think about it, flying textures all over the place.  If you know what you are doing you can sample down the AI textures and that will give a huge improvement on performance.  I believe DXTBMP is the tool you would need, I haven't used it in years.  On my old system FS9 was full of AI and ran very well.  Too much trouble to set it up all over again in P3d, I just use the defaults.  XP11's AI works well on my system.

I browsed these forums for months before deciding on a new system, took in everyone's average PC and results, helped me pick the right replacement for my old Gateway, now I have an MSI Vortex.  Very quiet little computer, just sits there churning up cycles for my sims.  I can hold the tower in one arm.

John

I also recommend "Process Lasso", a free utility which gives a good GUI image of the other processes running on your system.  A simmer's youtube video recommended it, so I did a quick scan of my system to look for nefarious process's, there were none.   You can use such tools to see if a background process is hogging the cpu's.
