The only thing you lose with the steam version as against fsx boxed is that steam removes the developement kit.

I have a SDK dir in FSX:SE !! It is filled with things. If you have the FSX box you can always install the SDK from that.

 

I also use ADE to fix airports so without SDK it would not work

The Steam Edition has all the SimConnect stuff you need and was included in the service packs of FSX and ecceloration as far as I can see. Including the legacy stuff.
