First new rig in a long time (proposed spec)

Exactly, one poor component will bottleneck everything else and choke it to an almost standstill.  You'd be getting the exact three symptoms you describe.

A well balanced system will far outperform one with some top notch components let down by a few dogs.

Wait 2-3 months for the Z270 motherboards and Kaby Lake 7700k CPUs.

If he doesn't have the budget for a 1070, he sure as hell isnt going to afford the latest cpu and motherboard

It's getting close to decision time, and now comes the biggest one...I can save over €200 by dropping back to a 6600K with GTX 1050, instead of opting for the 6700 with GTX 1060. It seems that the 6600 is a good overclocker, so would this be a worthwhile saving or a false economy?

Thanks...it's actually for FSX. I've mostly, but not completely, ruled our P3D. You reckon the processor would be OK though?

(I assume you're referring to the GTX 1060)

Oh I misread your proposed GPU.  I think for FSX the 1060 would be plenty assuming 1080P monitor.  The 6600K would be fine too.

If downgrading the SSDs to HDDs and going with a 6600K would make room in the budget for a GTX1070, I'd do that.  The SSDs will only help with faster boot and startup times...the underwhelming reality of a substandard GPU will be staring you in the face every second the sim runs.

Unfortunately, going down a notch with the CPU and graphics card brings the project back within budget. I still don't get to splash out on a 1070.

My monitor is 1650x1050. Your own posted specs are interesting, as you have older CPU and graphics card. How is performance for you with those?

Is the 1050 a typo?

No. The advice not to use the 1050 originally appeared to be because I was pairing it with the i7 6700. I figured it would be a better fit with the 6600, especially considering that many people who list their speak here seem to be happily running 9xx cards.

(Update) Ah...I think you answered that on Conzy6's thread...the 1060 is a better match for the 6600 too.

I'm not deliberately being difficult about this, by the way...I'm just anxious not to overspend for the latest and greatest, if I can get acceptable performance with a more modest spec (see my OP). I'm not querying whether the 6700/1060 combination is better, I'm querying whether it's €200 worth of better.

After careful consideration, a little research and a rejig of the budget...here is what I'll be pulling the trigger on tomorrow:

Case: be Quiet! Silent Base 600 Midi Tower
Motherboard: GigaByte Z170-Gaming K3 Intel Z170 DDR4 ATX
Processor: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0Ghz
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 3000MHz
Graphics Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 1060Ti Mini 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
CPU Cooler: be Quiet! Dark Rock TF
PSU: Corsair CX-M Series 650W 80 Plus Bronze Semi Modular
Storage: 128GB M.2 SSD for OS, 500GB Samsung EVO SSD for FSX, Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200RPM SATA HDD for everything else
OS: Windows 10 Pro

I hadn't planned on spending so much but I've offset some of the extra expense by trimming some non-performance-related items, e.g. case lighting, Blu-Ray burner, 2TB HDD.  Putting this together has been an enjoyable experience, in a weird kind of way, and I've learned a lot from it. My thanks to everyone who helped out with their input. See you in the (hopefully faster) skies...
