A 40-55 inch 4K TV is, for me, the current gold standard.  I use a 55" Samsung, and it's the best addition I've made to my simming in many years.  A 55 incher gets the display units on the PMDG birds to ~85% of life-size.  You'll want one that can synch at 30Hz--setting Vsync on in the sim with the monitor hardware at 30 produces the smoothest video performance I've ever gotten.

If you lack the desktop real estate, a Dell U3415W 21:9 widescreen is another really good choice.

I just bought a 40" Samsung 4k tv for about $325. I was sceptical but so far it is great. So much cheaper than a large monitor and p3d looks great with the shader packs etc.

Hi Folks,

Could someone please explain the difference in picture quality - monitor vs tv ??? Are there any other significant differences between the two - in our context of flight simulation  ??? It seems that TV's are considerably cheaper...

Thanks...

Scott

If you look at the economics, a company will sell 100,000 monitors to 3 million tvs. The the cost of the monitor will be higher as they don't sell as many. They cost the same to make. I see using a high end monitor is for graphic professionals. I am both. I have a 4k TV for flight sim and a real nice 27" and 24"  for my graphic work. I really love P3D in 4k and wont go back. You can get a 40 4ktv for about $300 or go bigger to a 50" for about $425

Interesting thoughts, Josh. I never even considered looking at a TV vs computer monitor, but the economics makes perfect sense. Is there any drawback to using a TV vs a monitor other than not having a very adjustable stand? It probably makes more sense to mount it.

Are there ones you recommend? Do they support DisplayPort?

I've not seen any computer monitors above the ~40 inch class.  I use a Samsung 55" 4K TV here, and it works very well for simming.  It works better than a monitor actually, becuase it supports 30 Hz refresh, and being able to use hardware vsync at a refresh rate that's attainable by modern systems running P3D makes things as smooth as I've ever seen them.

Displayport isn't much of an issue...you can buy a DP to HDMI adapter for around $20 if your video card won't support HDMI.
