Possible to add an airport in FSX?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I've recently moved house into the country (NE Victoria, Australia) and my place overlooks our local airfield (YMBT)

It doesn't exist/appear in FSX and I'm wondering if it's possible to add it in...

Airport Details:

The airfield is uncertified
Landing permission not required.

Coordinates 36 44.0’S 147 10.0’E

Elevation approx 1,100 AMSL

Single runway – direction 14/32
Surface
– Bitumen sealed
Width
– Bitumen strip is approx 10 meters wide
– total width (including grass area) is approx 22 meters. Grass areas adjoining runway may be very soft after rain.
Slope
– RWY 32 has slight downslope
– RWY 14 has slight upslope.
Useable length (approx)
– RWY 14 is 900m
– Runway 32 is 680m (due RWY 32 threshold permanently displaced by 220m)

Thanks,

Rob

All you need to do to add it is to download and use ADE which is freeware and has a tutorial. If you want to get fancy you could also use SBuilderX to add in a photorealistic ground base and surround scenery.

Also take a look in the scenery design forum that is below the FSX forum and you might find some ADE tutorials on YouTube.

firstly check that nobody else has already made a version.

However, creating an airport which does not exist is quite a complex process if you are not familiar with ADE...

The manual runs to over 300 pages....

Slope
– RWY 32 has slight downslope
– RWY 14 has slight upslope.

Sloped runways are possible to do in FSX, but they are not a beginner-level undertaking (and in any case are problematic for AI traffic). FSX only really has support for flat airports. I haven't looked at the ADE tutorial but hopefully it explains how to flatten the ground since you'll need to do that when adding a new airport before you start adding runways and taxiways/aprons.

Before you install ADE you should install the FSX SDK if you haven't already.

I would first create a photo insert using FSEarthTiles so that you can position the runway and buildings in the correct place using ADE:

Looks like YMBT is available from this link.

I guess when in doubt, google the ICAO code and FSX and see what turns up.

Still, making scenery/airports is rather easy, fun and rewarding to see your creation in FSX.
