777 Nearly Slams into Mt Wilson after LAX takeoff

Featured Replies

I imagine the pilot had it with the idiot ATC and was trying to react to the "terrain" alert blasting in the flightdeck. She was very unprofessional to say the least.

Assignment of fault in somewhat equal parts.  ATC clearly made a mistake, tried to correct it but did so quite poorly.  Pilots were clueless it seems, heading straight for terrain without any seeming concern for staying alive.  There are a number of ways the pilots should have been aware of their predicament but they didn't act on it or alert the ATC of their pending marriage with Mt. Wilson.  ATC controller might be fired but the pilots need to be disciplined as well.  Over 350 souls nearly bought it and all future passengers deserve regulatory action on this.

regulatory action? What do you propose?

FAA: ATP-ME, 737 CA, enough time in the 757/767 to be dangerous 🤠

Good old Mt. Wilson otherwise known as "RF Hell" to radio/television technicians.

A Jumbo Jet?

Over ATC a heavy but Jumbo Jet sounds better in sensational news reporting.

Over sensationalizing it sells more Fords and Smart Phones etc, its all about advertising revenue

I really appreciate how the Captain holding short for takeoff refused to budge until 1448 got to the gate.  Great job.

I've paxed a lot through LAX and while I've arrived a couple times on the 06s/07s, I don't recall ever departing from them.  Both ATC and AC need to be on their toes in that situation I would think.

Hi Mark,

Yeah - I'm amazed every time I watch the video - the controller is unbelievable - she's PO - aggravated - short tempered - and working very hard to kill someone that night - fortunately - the pilots had better sense... Sure - launch an airliner in zero visibility - when you can't see out the tower window - and another airliner is lost on the airport - lol - makes perfect sense...

Regards,
Scott

Now that controller was totally out of line!! I hope he's no longer there!!

The controller is still there.  Will be retrained and recertified.   People make mistakes.  If they fired every controller or airline pilot that made a mistake there would be no controllers and no airline pilots.

When the controller said "Air China" that should have given him a clue there may be a language issue.

My FAA license has an English proficiency endorsement.  All pilots who fly international must have that English proficiency endorsement on their license.

It is my responsibility as a pilot, whether acting as the Captain or First Officer or as an Instructor Pilot  to make sure that ATC does not put my aircraft into a hazardous situation.  I have said UNABLE before and have no problem saying UNABLE in the future.

I have the right of first refusal.

I know that but the Air China pilot/FO seemed to be having issues or was very confused. I could care less what's on your license.  I'm not cutting that Controller any slack.  I apologize if we have differing views.

Nothing new, just whatever's available in the stack for the errors made by ATC and the pilots that put 350 people dangerously close (seconds perhaps?) to deceased.

Would not want this to be just a little slap on the wrist.

That was a good read. Good points raised. Heathrow ( EGLL ) to me is the benchmark. Those controllers could play ping pong in the dark.

Any way, Merry Xmas everyone.  Or do you have to say Happy Holidays ?
