38 minutes ago, John V. stated there will be NO X-Plane Orbx development

Recommended Posts

Just read on their site, from a post 3/4's of an hour ago, from John V. himself, that he has announced that they do NOT 'want to string X Plane users along.' There will be no Orbx titles for this platform. He did say that within 6 months, there will be many 'beautiful' AeroFly FS2 releases. They made their decision on a number of criteria, of which was totally not spelled right out, some were, size of possible actual users, possible total sales volume, etc, etc...

So, no Orbx for XPlane.

LOL

So it was just a marketing trick to create traffic to their site...

ORBX isn't a small startup having to beg for a little more traffic to its site.

However, we may or may not factor in a number of quite hostile forum contributions against the ORBX XP engagement.

Kind regards, Michael

"Size of possible users" yet will release for Aerofly. Some people have really weird thought process.

While it's shame a big dev like Orbx won't come to the platform, let's be honest. Their products didn't have much future in X-Plane eaither way with the quality of the freeware stuff.

AeroFly seriously....

Most seriously....

He stated in his post, that they had an X-Plane 10/11 project working in house, except for animated human characters, of which they would have made work eventually.  So, they had one...were seriously thinking about it...but for whatever reason it was, X-Plane porting has been cancelled.

I think he's still sourpuss over Austin's recent remarks in regards to Venema's previous distaste for X-Plane and their change of heart.

They commented on how everything ported over so well, 1:1 and X-Plane is by no means an irrelevant business platform. So I can't really see any reason for this, when they choose to support an early access title Aerofly 2 FS, with a microscopic playerbase, no real roadmap in sight and seemingly glacial development pace.

As I said previously, flight sim software is JV's livelihood not his hobby. His public statements, like those of Austin Meyer are carefully measured and are solely business oriented.

He floated an idea about XP and given the response from the community, he decided that it's not presently an option. Maybe next year.

But it also isn't as big as you think. ;) They need all the traffic they can get. Otherwise he never would have made that announcement. He didn't post all that because he had nothing better to do. EDIT What Jay says!

But well, okay, so that big R&D commitment turned out to be a quite small one: took just over two weeks to figure out X-Plane isn't worth the trouble. From now on I will take everything that is announced at Orbx with a punch of salt.

I do regret the decision mainly because having Orbx work on X-Plane might have attracted other developers. I wasn't planning on buying any straight converted addons anyway. I was hoping for some novelty X-Plane only addons but well...

Since they apparently had no major issues doing conversions, my wild guess is that they couldn't get decent frame rates with the much larger draw distance of X-Plane. Or maybe Austin's comment just ticked him off, but I'll bet there's a technical reason in the background. Or maybe there's just too much great free scenery out there already.

What I'm really curious about is how they're highlighting a move towards Areofly with no mention of the new DTG FS, where they were supposedly partners. You'd think there would be some mention of that, along with the Aerofly and ditching X-Plane news. Does this mean the DTG sim is on indefinite hold now? Maybe it's reading too much into the tea leaves, but I'll bet there's an interesting back story here.

Well, he DID mention DTG: he said they would install the DTG SDK when it has been released and then they will see if they can do anything with it. So nothing is certain yet. As I said, it's all marketing hype.

Much ado about nothing, so it turns out.

I'd judge there's a mixture of reasons. Performance / Frame Rates, perceived attitude, personal. Hard to judge, and I'll bet we never hear all the story - especially if it does actually come down to performance. No company is going to want to admit that they can't make something work acceptably.

Performance might be a reason why they would want to shift weight behind Aerofly - Nothing but frame-rate friendly scenery for miles around likely gives a very blank canvas to work with.

It's all speculation, I guess. Gosh, we are good at that.

You'll have to go and read the verbatim post, but he did say that they are going to load the DTG SDK, and see what's up with it....and also will be loaded upon release, the P3D '4' SDK.
