In all honesty, I don't think Orbx airports would have been a big seller in X-Plane...there are some small but seriously talented airport developers in X-Plane already, and the freeware community is massive. Converting from P3D to X-Plane cost me about 10% of what it cost me to move from FSX to P3D!

Where Orbx would have made a difference is in their Regions package, they are very popular, but X-Plane, in particular X-Plane 11, has been going along swimmingly BEFORE Orbx made any announcements of considering coming to the X-Plane party, and them deciding to do an about turn changes nothing.

 

Actually just this morning I saw another incredible airport about to be released for X-Plane 11 in Brazil, and my first thought was how P3D would love to see an airport like that....

 

For those blaming Austin for this....he did not troll, he had a bit of fun and they exchanged a few emails, there was nothing there so please don't make this a big issue. The decision is John Venema's alone. Austin and the LR team are completely open to ANY developer contacting them and requesting features added or modified in the XP platform to assist their development, and this open approach won't change.

Seasons for a start, but then you knew that already.

 

Oh you are talking about the baked scenery in FSX, that's not seasons, season are what we all call weather changes, like rain, snow, cold, hot, etc.

 

Now, if you would have said enhanced features, then we would not be having this conversation.

From a technical standpoint, it appears one of the issues may have had to do with libraries.  I get the feeling that ORBX couldn't figure out how to lock down their libraries to prevent them from being mobile, as is everything in XP is right now.  I sense a copyright or DRM issue that could have come about.  As John said, there was an issue with people, which equates to the Peopleflow module that ORBX has, along with objectflow, creatureflow, etc.  I may be speculating, and that's fine, but it does have some validity and if I am wrong, that is fine too.

My guess is that their big "R&D" investment into x-plane consisted of realizing that a simple conversion of airports to x-plane does not cut it and in order for them to look good you cant pull off an fsx2xplane conversion but actually modify each airport, which blew his calculation.

 

Lets face it JV doesnt care about x-plane, never has.  Imho there was never some giant R&D planned to revolutionize x-plane. They wanted to dump their (admittely great) ga airports onto x-plane with minimal effort to generate cash for their other projects. They realized that a quick port looks crap and they are scrapping the idea. x-plane userbase not hailing him like the second comming of jeebus also made that easier i suppose :D

Personally, I'm glad to hear this. I've never been a fan of X-Plane - the scenery just looks unrealistic and strange in my opinion, not to mention the fact that it lacks a lot of features that FSX has, and I'm glad ORBX won't be wasting time developing for this platform.

 

The future of flight simulation lies with P3D and DTG simulation platforms.

You know whats even stranger ? It's how the blurry scenery comes into focus as you fly in FSX/P3D ! But its the future of Flight Simulation, lol....... It must be the Best Thing Since Sliced Bread ! What a joke....

If we look at the improvement made by ORBX FTX Global, Vector, etc. to P3D, it's evident that P3D became a more attractive platform for everyone, including both the users and the developers - of all type of addons, not only scenery- . Once a player like ORBX decides not to move into X-Plane it will for sure make X-P less attractive to a lot of people... and of course to some developers as well.

We see this happening in all business areas and would not be something new if it happens to X-P.

 

I don't think Orbx has the clout you think it has in this market, but I could be wrong. They've had the luxury of developing on an essentially static and dead platform for 10 years, and they know their customers will have to re-buy their entire catalog moving forward into the 64 bit world of modern simulation.

 

They have several choices. One is expected but no word on when (64-bit P3D), one is a nice lightweight sim without deep plane modeling or full world coverage (Aerofly FS2), and one is vaporware as far as we know (DTG FS).

 

Only X-Plane 11 is a fully developed 64-bit simulation that works right now including planes with deep systems modeling, with support from several "major" developers. So their choice is curious to say the least.

Good riddance to Orbx. Way over price OOM creating upgrade? I already jumped ship when they said all future releases of P3D will require a full repurchase of the products. When you have spent well over $1000 on Orbx that is a very sour taste to accept! No thanks.

I've owned every version of flight simulator since Flight Simulator 3.0 in 1988.

X-Plane doesn't need ORBX, the underlying scenery system (OSM) is so much better, and it will improve with time, for free.

 

For whatever reasons, betting against XP in 2017 is just plain dumb.

That and the fact that LM has no more room left to optimize P3D, going 64bit (if it ever does) will cure OOM's but I suspect it will tax performance,
