P3d V2 - V3 - Explain the magic of Migration tool?

Hi guys,

 

Question.

 

I just installed Aerosoft Kilimanjaro HTKJ into my P3d V3 and I copied the p3d exe into a desktop folder, pointed the installer there, and then copied the three folders over to my main.

 

It seemed to go ok, but I didn't have very many night lights, so i thought, hey must be the scenery but to make sure, I uninstalled and ran migration tool and installed.

 

Now it works perfectly.

 

My question is,,,, what does the migration tool do that a manual install doesnt?

It ensures that absolutely anything that the installer would have done "migrates" properly into the P3Dv3 directories and folder structures.

 

A manual install may point the installer to your main P3D directory but nits and nats may either get misdirected or installed improperly. Further, some installers also write directory instructions into the registry that also aid in a proper installation. Migration tool writes those values, as intended, too.

I'll ask a similar question, what does it do that is bad for your p3d install? I bought it when I bought p3dv2, but haven't used it in v3 as I've seen people on this forum saying it could do bad things to a p3d install, but I'm not clear on what.

Many people that have flown P3D for quite awhile will not use it. It can cause problems. I personally would never use it.

I have been using it for over a year and I am still on the same windows install and p3d install (apart from client updates)

Not scaremongering at all. I personally have had to repair many user systems where the main cause of problems was the migration tool. It is a time bomb. You may have been lucky but sooner or later it will bite you. I(f you are lucky, a simple reinstall of P3D will work, if not, the registry gets trashed and a complete OS install could be necessary.

 

It is especially dangerous for novice users.

Reality is not scaremongering, it is also not sticking one's head in the sand. There are many people including some moderators on this site that recommend not using it.

What can happen?

Basically it is a spoofing tool that writes false entries into the Windows registry with the sole purpose of spoofing software installers poorly designed to require specific versions.  When you remove the darn thing it doesn't undo the damage it did to your registry.

 

Stay away.

Your registry can get corrupted. Some files can get corrupted and/or overwritten. Essentially rendering your system unusable.

Hi,

 

I just did a fresh install of Win 10 and P3D v3. From before, I had downloaded all all the Orbx sceneries I had from a previous P3D setup. I had already migrated to FTX Central V3 a while back without any issues.

 

So what I did was:

 

  1) Download FTX Central v3 from Orbx Direct.

  3) Once FTX Central was installed, I launched the app and logged on.

  4) After loading, it presented me with all the apps I had previously purchased from Orbx.

  5) The first thing I downloaded was Orbx FTX Global using FTX Central (it downloads and installs automatically)

  6) Then, using Orbx FTX central I selected and downloaded/ installed the library.

       Note #1 - it is important to down load/install the library or else the scenery will not display properly. I know, I tried it!

       Note #2 - There is provision in FTX Central to download previously downloaded scenery (I didn't use this method).

  7) Continue to select, download, and install the remaining scenery.

 

All in all it was a very simple, easy process................much better than the old wrapper technique.

It really depends on the scenery. Sometimes you can install it into a dummy folder and move it to P3D. Sometimes all you need to do is put a dummy FSX.EXE file in the P3D folder and point to it. And, there are some that are not really compatible with P3D and cannot or shouldn't be installed.
