Hi All

I am about to embark on a PC upgrade: Asus Maximus Hero vIII Mobo, i7 6700k CPU, 1000w corsair PSU, h80 water cooler, use my existing GTX780 card

Ram these days is a mine field - they have mega speeds but the CL are really high.

What is the best ram for my build to run FSX and P3D v3.4

Thanks guys

I went for... GSklill Ripjaw V 3200 MHz. Great RAM, high quality Samsung modules.

Why not go for a Z270 motherboard and a 7700k Kaby Lake processor?

Good point. At the moment there's hardly any price difference.

Too New, sometimes it takes a while for Mobo updates etc to filter through. There is also talk about Windows 7 not being compatible fully too - don't know if that is all just bull though.

Are there any Ram experts around guy's?

I need to know about ram CL vs Speed specifically for FSX P3D

Thanks

7700k as good as 6700k on Z170.

If you want good mems for FSX/P3D and run Z170 with 4 mem slots on the MoBo,  G-Skill 3600 C15 2X8gb is good

I run 4000mhz C15 with sligtly higer mem voltage 1.45v. MoBo Asus Maximus VIII Extreme (not official bios, better memory magnament) , cpu 7700k

Hi

If I understand correctly, you run a Kaby Lake in a Hero Maximus vIII Motherboard (can this be done out of the box or would I need new mobo firmware?) And you feel C15 is low enough CL?

I am currently on 7 8 7 24 2 T with a Sandy Bridge (very old) so the latency these days seems much higher.

Is it better to have 3600 and C15 rather than 2666 and C13?

You cannot compare directly a modern DDR4 3200Mhz CL 15 or CL17 to an olde DDR3 running timings like 7-8-7-24. The DDR4 3200 running timings like 15 is way, way, way faster. Those timing values are effectively a factor of the frequency that the RAM runs at. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Yes, 3600 at C15 is going to be faster on all fronts than 2666 C13. CL15 is actually good for 3600Mhz RAM. That would compare to CL7 on 1600Mhz RAM.

Just be careful going beyond 3200 MHz on the RAM, some motherboards capped out at 3200.

Even though your motherboard might support 4 RAM slots, it is generally recommended to use only 2 slots. For example 2 x 8GB is better that 4 x 4GB.

You can calculate it : Timing x 2000 / MHz = Latency in ns.

13x2000/2666=9.75ns for 2666 and the faster 3600 c15 15x2000/3600=8.33ns

Lower latency is better

Maximus Hero VIII have no problem with 3600mhz Its just fine

You can run 4x8 32gb 3600mhz c15 XMP on the Hero without any problem

There is a difference on MoBo.s two memslots and four the 2slots is genarelly better run easy 4266mhz

Good 4slot MoBo as Asus Rog do 3900-4000mhz

Hi Greg

Thank you. I really appreciate the advise because I do not know the answer to my question.

Your post is very reassuring, thanks.

may I also ask (money no object, must be available) which ram would you use with my choice of new hardware?

I do like this mathematical equation, it's something 'almost' understandable!

Please can you explain to me the '2000' number?

Thank you for you input. As I asked above what's your choice of ram?

Where did you hear this/what did you hear?  I'm curious because I'm near pulling the trigger on a major upgrade but I want to KEEP Win7 Pro.

Eng is not for me, 2000 = get Ns in answer, ex 3200 mem is 1600 (1000/0.5=2000) simple as that.
