Upgrade Inbound, Landing Checklist

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, after much research and deliberation I'm about ready to pull the trigger on my upgrade.  My planned components are below, I'd love to hear people's thoughts before I go ahead with it:

Mobo: GIGABYTE Aorus GA-Z270X-Gaming K5 (rev. 1.0)

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128966&_ga=1.137079472.1061115704.1469585710

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117726&_ga=1.137079472.1061115704.1469585710

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14D-16GVK, Timing 14-14-14-34

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232217&_ga=1.108167426.1061115704.1469585710

CPU Fan: Noctua NH-D15S 140mm SSO2 D-Type Premium CPU Cooler, NF-A15 PWM Fans

SSD (For OS only, not for Prepar3d, see notes): Intel SSD 600p Series (256GB, M.2 2280 80mm NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4, 3D1, TLC) Reseller Single Pack

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167411&_ga=1.78872980.1061115704.1469585710

OS: Windows 10 Home - 64-bit - OEM

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416892&_ga=1.78872980.1061115704.1469585710

Notes:

- I went with 16GB of RAM primarily because DCS World 2 is reported to work much better with 16GB, I didn't neccessarily tdo that based on anything P3D related

- My current CPU is an i5 2500k overclocked to 4.5Ghz

- The SSD is only intended for my OS and perhaps a few other things.  I'll be buying a much larger, top of the line SSD at some point in the future for P3D (likely when v4 is released)...frankly I'm trying to spread the cash flows of my overall upgrade over a bit of time.  For now I'll install P3D and the rest on my old hard drive.

- I am running a GTX770 with 4GB Ram onboard, I'll likely upgrade that later this year.

- For those who may have read my other thread earlier this week, I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to Windows 10 rather than buy a 6700k and stick with Windows 7.

I also wanted to thank everyone who participates in this forum, both those who have replied directly to my posts and those who have contributed elsewhere (I read a lot of threads in this forum over the past six months or so).  It's relatively easy to get hardware advice for regular gaming elsewhere on the net, but P3D/FSX specific advice is hard to come by other than places like this.

Thanks!

Dave

Just finished my build today, somewhat similar to yours. It's fun and very rewarding.

What did you have before? What sort of fps upgrade did you get?

A few minor tweaks, I'm going to go with the Gaming 5 mobo rather than K5 (with shipping factored in it's only $CDN13 more expensive and it comes with an additional USB 3 port).  I'm also going to buy a full version of WIndows 10 Home rather than the OEM version.  More flexibility down the road and only CDN$15 difference in price.

Ahh cool, I see - I shouldn't have been posting that late on a Saturday night :)

I placed my order today so I'll report back once everything is up and running.

Actually was wondering about this guys' experience?

Had i7-3770 @ 3.5, OS not on an SSD (the biggest difference). I upgrade the VC when the 1080 first came out, so I was able to transfer that over.

Regarding FPS, running a 50' 4K (60hz) before the upgrade I was at 30-50 PMDG NGX, now I'm between 40-70. The biggest difference I see is texture and sim load up times - that's what's night and day with this build (M.2 SSD).

All of my components except one will be here tomorrow...the final one, my SSD, won't arrive until next Thursday as newegg shipped it from Vancouver rather than Toronto, where everything else I've ever bought came from (I'm on the Canadian east coast, so closer to England than BC!). Arrrgh! Killing me newegg! If I'd known that at checkout I would have sprung for express shipping for that item.

I'd put together the system using any spare hard drive, and when the SSD comes, just clone the system to SSD. Easy.

I've never done that before, pretty easy? The only thing that needs to go on the drive is the OS (new install of windows 10)
