Fog. Given that one report said that the 747-400 overran the runway and that it hit a village, it suggests that it was landing on Rwy 26 since there is a village near the end of it where there is no village near the end of Rwy 8 - based on current Google Maps Imagery.  There is an ILS on Rwy 26 and that runway is over 13,000 feet long.   To overrun it means they may have landed way long.

Actually according to reports they were doing a go-around, with a botched go-around it is very easy to run out of the runway regardless how long it is.
