P3D VAS usage (FSL A320 related)

Featured Replies

FYI, Lefteris posted in the FSLabs  forum that version 3.3.5 and earlier of P3D have a memory leak with 2D panels. http://forums.flightsimlabs.com/index.php?/topic/10494-vas/&do=findComment&comment=85005

Just wondering who uses 2D panels these days. I even forget what is that

If you have a homecockpit setup and not just one single monitor, then you do. Not as uncommon as you think.

Yeah but people get fed up with that type of thing and learn. Too many expensive addons with too many "same code, higher price with no real excuse" will lower sales, no matter how they put it.

An addon such as the FSL320 at 140 eur or the upcoming 747 at 160 eur or similar would sell MUCH MORE and to a higher profit if the price was below the 100 mark. It's not rocket science.

They probably would sell more copies. But there is no way for us to know whether they would also make a higher profit. You need more information for that, information that is not (always) available to the public.

Me! :P

However, you may not use 2D panels per se, but if you pop up the instruments/MCDU etc etc then these are affected in the same way.

Yeah, well... i have to agree on that.

I'd have to check the exact details, but I'm sure that the LOD radius wouldn't have been set to maximum (I know there are pitfalls there). I'm aware of the difficulties in comparing the two, but fundamentally having set everything it was possible to set the same we still came out an average of I would say 300-500mb down when we compared the two, with very small fluctuations between testers.

v3.3.x may be different -- I don't think we directly tested that (at least not since I've been involved). However, v3.3 has a GDI memory leak involving 2D panels (e.g. popups etc) that was fixed in 3.4.

My only explanation is that the higher VAS consumption in P3D compared to FSX must be related to settings that are not comparable (I am intentionally saying "not comparable" instead of "not identical", because seemingly identical settings do not transpire into identical graphical results in the two sims).

I have also conducted a controlled test with the other FS Labs product (Concorde-X), where I have compared the VAS usage between FSX-SE DX9, DX10 and P3D v3.2. I concluded that the VAS consumption is way higher in FSX DX9 over P3D, whereas in DX10, it is similar to P3D at best.

I know that we are talking about v3.4 these days, but unless there is something wrong with the system, I can't imagine that v3.4 consumes 500 MB more than v3.2 (it doesn't on my system; I have 100 MB more VAS at most).

Folks,

Should I purchase FSL Spotlight to use it with their Bus? I have never owned any of their products.

That is exactly the thing -- many people reported big VAS increases by rolling back from 3.4 to 3.3 (but at the expense of the 2D/pop-up panel memory leak bug).

You don't need to purchase Spotlights -- you can download it for free and it will be fully functional with the A320-X (you can obviously purchase the full version if you want to use it with other aircraft).

The only reason I'm back at 3.3.5 is because of the Nvidia driver error that pops up in 3.4 hotfix2 after installing the FSLabs airbus. I did not read anything in the Spotlight releasenotes that that issue was fixed, right? I'd prefer to be on 3.4 as it feels a little smoother to me.

I haven't locked any of the FSL320 pricing topics.  I do believe it needs to be discussed as high prices can potentially have a damaging effect on flight simulation but we all survived the high price for the Ariane 737 just after the FSX release.

Oh jeeze Ariane what a fail that was...

Hey congrats on the new pc, just noticed your sig. She's a beauty and auto OC to 5.0 nice!

I have the same issue. I believe we had contact about it on the FSL support forum.

Thanks Angelo.  Your system is not too bad itself!  I have one of the first Samsung 960 EVO USB drives that plugs into the MB.  Superfast!  So far the OC remains stable.

Best regards,

Jim

Wow Jim, that's a very nice system, pretty much everything is what i'm looking into for a upgrade

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a little longer, but i should be able to upgrade this year. For now, i'm looking to buy ASUS Strix GTX 1080, should fit into my current system just fine. From what i've read, my 2700K will not bottleneck 1080 becouse of high OC, and becouse i'm not using 4K monitor(but that's a discussion for another forum i guess).

I belive you should not be FPS limited at all now, the only limiting factor should be VAS. I hope you enjoy it.

On topic, i'm not using P3D, but the last FSL A320 update just made my day. VAS is ok now, and spotlights are not affecting my fps like previous versions

Before you buy, do some searches on how do I turn on the fans for the ASUS Strix GTX 1080.  Thousands of people asking but ROG and ROG members are just asking about the temps and when you tell them 95 degrees they just say, RMA!!  There are no directions that come with the card.  There is an ASUS GPU TweakII program where you can click on Professional Mode and it allows you to manually turn on the fans if you see they card is getting hot.  But that setting goes back to the auto as soon as you close the program or restart your system.  They do have some info on the ROG Forums about somehow plugging a couple of your case fans into the card so they can control those fans too to keep your card cool.  Since I auto overclocked it to 5GHz, it seems the overclock program takes care of the fans and turns them on when needed.

Best regards,

Jim
