I have 2 gtx680 video cards SLI and running p3d 3.4 with lot of addons.

Would I gain anything to upgrade to a GTX1080?

Thanks

Paul

Can anyone tell me if there is much difference between the GTX1070 and 1080 besides 300$.

Well whatever your budget is if you can afford the 1080 go for it, the difference is clock speeds

The 1080 is a huge step up from 2 680s (probably about 50% improvement), and P3D will definitely run better especially if you run higher than 1080p resolution. However, the difference won't be massive if you only run P3D and use a single 1080p monitor.

Basically if you play any graphics intensive games or want to sim multimonitor, or 1440p or 4K, a 1080 or 1070 is a worthy upgrade IMO. Especially if you have the 2GB 680.

Edit: unless you're running 4K resolution, not much point in going with a 1080 over a 1070 (I do have both).

I made the switch to 4k over Christmas and the sim struggles with my 970 in any type of situation with clouds. I plan on upgrading to either a 1070 or a 1080. For 4k, what would be the best option? I really don't want to spend an extra 300 bucks for a 1080 if a 1070 will do a good job with 4k and P3d. However, IF the 1080 is just leaps and bounds over the 1070 in 4k, then I may have to wait longer to save up.

The biggest improvement you see will be because of the jump from 3.5GB to 8GB of video memory, so if you are only using Prepar3d or FSX then a 1070 won't be a whole lot worse than a 1080 since they both have the same amount of VRAM.

My laptop has a full desktop 1070, and I upgraded my desktop from a 980ti (almost equivalent to 1070) to a 1080, and later to SLI. Prepar3d at 4K ran just fine with the 980ti but I struggled in playing most other games at 4K until I had a 1080.

To sum up, if you play ANY other modern games, including X-Plane, at 4K resolution, then the 1080 would be a better option. Otherwise I think you'll be happy with a 1070.

This may sound stupid but I don't know much about computer hardware, but what do you mean p3d at 4K.

Ok think I got it now. I have a single monitor Dell U3014.

They are referring to 4K TV or Monitor. 4K has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 which means your pushing more pixels. FYI, I run a 4K on the 1070 and my GPU barley reaches 50%.
