First flights with the Rift

Spot on, an excellent and amusing explanation. It's so difficult to actually say what VR is like but, LOL, I think you will now have a number of people scrambling for a rift and a GTX 1080

LOL and thank you.  :wink: Yes, it is so hard to describe: you have to experience it. Words can not describe this and what you see on your 2D monitor can never even give you a hint of what VR does for a flightsim. Despite all the drawbacks and all the limitations this is worth every cent I spend on the GTX 1080 and the Rift. Seriously. The only thing that can top this is flying in real life but 1. that'll cost you a lot more in no time, 2. you'd have to get a license first (talking about money), 3. it will limit where you can fly and what planes you can fly, and 4. it might be dangerous LOL Amongst others.

VR seriously is IT. And of course specially, if not only, in Aerofly FS 2!!!

You've made a seriously long journey from how you approached this sim previously to where you are now.....

And you've apparently taken to VR like a duck to water!  :lol:

Stop teasing me.. I'm holding a personal boycott to CV1 to protest Rift's despicable decision on stuffing CV1 with a screen not even 2K. I need to have peace in my mind to patient wait for a decent 4K VR...

@FlyIce,

      I agree about the CV1 resolution so I am waiting as well for CV2 - but enjoying most aspects of VR even with the old DK2. I see from your icon image of the large screen in front of the pseudo cockpit that maybe that is your current approach and that works really well except you can't see well left or right or behind. Well, you could add a pair of 70 inch screens to the left and right. That is what I was going to do before the Rift came along. That is essentially what I did at Boeing Airplanes for many years and really in an airliner, looking forward is what you do most. With FSX/P3D you can add more monitors and have your instruments on a screen below the outside scenery so with some space and money, you can really create a nice simulation with almost the same feel as VR. Personally, I would like both so friends can enjoy it more easily. Then add a motion platform,... Still, VR has really rekindled interest in such a fun area of interest - flying! Can't afford to do it for real anymore at $200USD per hour with an instructor.

    I just really am thrilled with Aerofly FS2 - flying in a Pitts/F15 over Sedona or the Grand Canyon is a terrific experience.

I dread the moment when Sesquashtoo will get hold of a VR headset... :smile:

I'm doing a lot of waiting myself, for my prescription VR-lenses to arrive. Apparently they are on their way from Thailand, which is not what I expected, and are spending a lot of quality time at a lot of DHL facilities as they wend their way across the earth.........

LOL Haha, I was thinking the same when I sort of did my Ses imitation. ;)

Anybody perusing this thread and thinking of grabbing a HMD could do worse than taking a look at this link. Theyre an ambitious challenger to Amazon with some nice get-to-know-us deals. https://jet.com/product/Oculus-Rift/b4702a93e89d41a8b3638f62f3ac9141

H guys, first post here. I've been using AFS2 with my CV1 for a few months now and for me its the VR killer app, and that includes _all_ my Oculus library titles. What impresses me the most is the use of PBR lighting in the cockpit and how you can almost reach out and touch the rivets and screws. The fighter jet cockpits give me a feeling of being cold with all the metal surfaces, but the Cessna 'feels' somehow warmer and more tactile with its leather and cloth materials. Nothing I've used in the CV1 comes close to giving me that sense of 'being there' like AFS2 does.

Hi there and welcome!

Yes, AFS2 is great. During the last week I've been trying a few other titles and spend a lot of time searching for other interesting games but nothing comes close to AFS2. Dirt Rally is nice for a ride or two every now and then, ETS2 is becoming boring already (and runs bad) and nothing else out there seems to be of interest... but AFS2 is great all the time. Luckily, because I bought the Rift specially for AFS2. ;)

The sense of being there is indeed great. A game like ETS2 looks fake in comparison, too cartoonish, it's obviously a computer game. But AFS2 really gives you the idea you are flying. Don't know of it is the light or the texturing or the dimensions or the photoreal, but whatever it is, it works. When I am flying, I am really somewhere else. Soooooo relaxing!

At first I was afraid I would get a bit bored because I am used to sometimes checking the internet or do something else while I am flying (all while I am still in the VC btw, I never leave the PC when I fly) and you can't do that with the Rift on your head, but instead of that I am sucked into the virtual world and I am actually glad nothing else can distract me. When I am flying I am really flying and that's it! Great stuff.
