Ransomware in PMDG P3D B777 download?

Recommended Posts

I downloaded the latest PMDG P3D B777-200 basepack from the pmdg-site. After extracting and executing the file, my MalwareBytes told me it contained ransomware and placed it in quarantaine. So not able to install it. Malwarebytes also deleted the installation file.

What to do?

It is a false positive.

You can re-download again and make sure to disable MalwareBytes during the installation.

Disable active scanning while you download/install our software and then reactivate it when you're done. It's a false positive.

To be honest, the AV industry took a turn for the worse a while back in my opinion. A lot of the 3rd party suites are getting a lot more aggressive than they should be (almost like "we need to show users that we're catching things to make them see value in continuing to pay for a license," not to sound too conspiratorial). For the longest time, I was a huge supporter of various 3rd party AV products (I was usually the one walking around campus to my friends' dorm rooms to both remove whatever virus(es) they managed to catch, and then install the free Norton suite we got as students at the university). Since about 2010, though, I've simply run MSSE (Windows Defender, or whatever they call the one that comes with Win now). The whole industry has allowed their products to become large, ungainly, performance-hogging, bullyware (just try uninstalling one of them and this last term becomes immediately clear).

I run the same as Kyle, just using the MS built in one, and being careful in how i use the net. That said, if my system was trashed I would just rebuild or restore from a image backup, which not everyone can do.

We use ESET Endpoint at work, the consumer NOD32 versions are just as good and seem to be a lot lighter and less bullying than Norton et al.
