XPlane 11 default clouds, playing with datarefs

Recommended Posts

As the title says.

Somewhere above Italy.

For me the default clouds are not so bad, after a bit tweaking of some datarefs.

What do you guys think?

I think they look fine. Once you are satisfied with the results, will you be sharing what others need to do to replicate your effect?

What scenery are you using?

I had to take care of flickering textures while in flight, I think I got rid of them now.

You can try to put this in a lua script:

--script start below

-- white from above, grey from below
set("sim/private/controls/cloud/sample_opacity", .03)          --.05--
set("sim/private/controls/clouds/light_curve_power", 4.2)
set("sim/private/controls/clouds/light_curve_ratio", .57)      --  0.98 --
set("sim/private/controls/clouds/diffuse_gain", 3.25)               --  1.00 --
set("sim/private/controls/clouds/ambient_gain", 0)                  -- 1 --
set("sim/private/controls/clouds/overdraw_control", .5)            -- 0.5 --

-- cloud shadows and attempt to stop flickering (Jim Stewart)
set( "sim/private/controls/clouds/cloud_shadow_lighten_ratio", 0.75) --0.5--
set( "sim/private/controls/clouds/shad_radius", 0.75)
set( "sim/private/controls/clouds/shadow_size", 2048.00)
set( "sim/private/controls/clouds/shad_alpha_dry", 1.50)
set( "sim/private/controls/clouds/shad_alpha_wet", 1.50)

-- murmurs shadow corrections at sunrise/sunset:
set( "sim/private/controls/skyc/max_shadow_angle",-89)
set( "sim/private/controls/skyc/min_shadow_angle",-90)
--end of script

Other scripts I tried did not have enough contrast in the clouds IMO, but beauty is in the eye beholder.
Have fun and experiment away.

One note, I expect LR to improve the clouds in one of the next beta releases, then you must remember to remove this script.

And on the eighth day God saw that he wasn't really quite satisfied yet with the clouds he had created earlier.

And God said: "Let's play with the datarefs."

And God created the skies with overcast conditions, cumulus clouds and what-not.

And God blessed them, saying "Let them be fluffy and white (or at least whitish)."

And God saw that it was good.

(He did still worry about their fps performance though, but he thought 'Let's leave that for another day')

Looks nice! How are the fps? Because my main issue with default clouds, even before their look, is how they murder my fps

This was funny. Yeah, maybe God (Ben?) should do it right next time (I missed my beta shot last weekend and now I am in denial).

For the framerates, I got a GTX 1070, and it has enough head room, clouds are not impacting as much as it did for my old trustworthy GTX650 Ti.

Above shots are all between 30 and 40 frames/second, and that is with multiple cloud layers.

One could play with this line:

set("sim/private/controls/clouds/overdraw_control", .5)

with 0 being most clouds, but most impact on framerate, and 1.0 removing most of the clouds, and see if you find a sweet spot between looks and performance.

By the way, is that default scenery? Looks very convincing!

Unfortunately not, it is photoscenery I created with Ortho4xp, zoomlevel 16 and zoomlevel 17 around the airports.

I did all of the Alps, and cris cross all around over the place, some views are too real.

I also add w2xp sceneries from http://simheaven.com/.

For US and Germany, I usually fly with default textures and autogen.

But Southern Europe really needs its own autogen, w2xp is the next best thing.
