Odd failure? - Nose Tire Balance

Recommended Posts

Yep! I don't know what it is either! hahaha and it ain't in the QNH!

I noticed an odd noise like a wobbly wheel as the nose touched down into Denpasar Indonesia tonight, didn't think much of it and it taxied fine.

However I had another failure which was a high pressure bleed valve failed in the closed position - not sure if related?

Good on you for trying the failures out, certainly makes being a simulator pilot more interesting.

In our imperfect world, the tires/wheels are susceptible to abnormal wear/damage in addition to normal wear.

There isn't too much you can do about that "failure" except report it to your mechanic after landing.

Very cool that this is simulated because it does happen in real life and usually attracts maintenance checks, some more reports from pilots, some more maintenance checks until it finally gets fixed. Most of the time some wheel changes fix the problem, but not always.

In real world aviation maintenance, unbalanced nose wheel tires are a very common pilot squawk. Usually noted as a heavy vibration at a particular speed - often while the tires are spinning down after takeoff. Commonly happens as the tires wear down in use. Hawker aircraft seem especially prone to the problem. Sometimes we can pull the wheel off and re-adjust the balance weights on a spin balance machine similar to those used for automobile tires - but often easier just to install a new tire.
