Pilot Controlled Runway Lights

Yes...I know... necro-topic...but still relevent.  Has anyone come up with a way yet for pilot-controlled lighting?  I did a search on Avsim for 'radio runway lights', and this thread is as close it came.

 

As you'll recall, at uncontrolled airport, rw pilots turn the runway lights on at-will by a certain number of clicks on the CTAF...  most likely a lot more complicated in our sim world, either XPXI or P3D?  If it would help the logic of it any, rw will actually turn on runway lights on all airports in range of the transmitter (on the same frequency, of course)

Jim, I spit your post from the old one since it was dating back to the FS9 days.

 

As far as your question, you can't do this with default airports but I think there are one or two 3rd party airports on the market that let you control the lights by tuning a certain Nav frequency. Can't recall what airports they are however.

Yeah, I remember one or two addon airports that allowed a radio frequency to control the lights, but also can't remember which ones and even forgot the frequencies fairly quickly too.

If you created a mission in FS, whereby a scenery object was triggered by an action, I guess you could make the lights that mission object, that would probably do the trick.

^^^^ You have no idea how far over my head that is :-) I'm the same sort of simmer I am pilot...country boy basics.

 

My ideal scenario would be... I've left one airport, wandering via pilotage to another one that should be...um, right there, somewhere. Have a button previously assigned....five clicks and the lights come on at the airports on that freq in the area. Voila...there's my airport! Kicker is that it might be any airport in any area, like in the rw. So that's my my best of all possible worlds deal.

 

Sounds like the 'mission object' thing is something pre-defined/previously determined?

Scenery developers have made objects change or move such as tuning a radio frequency and it opens a hanger door at an air field. I bet this would be possible to trigger scenery objects that light up the runway. I am no scenery design guy but it sounds possible. You could ask in the scenery design forum or the well known fs scenery developer forum, fsdeveloper.com

Pie in the sky, I know, but I wish LM would create a standardized set of lights for devs to use so that lights would look relatively uniform and good.  Part of that could be for radio controlled runway lights (or if a pilot asked ATC to turn the lights down or up).  Also, standardized sets of floodlights, obstruction lights, road lights, etc.

Yes, standardisation of lights across airport addons would be excellent. I have a large number of payware airports and there is considerable variability in the intensity of the lighting between products and developers. I am surprised at how dull the approach lights are at some airports, with some only becoming visible, even in good weather, at 2 or 3 miles out. In reality, the approach lights should be amongst the brightest lighting visible on the ground, but sometimes the street lighting can exceed these in intensity! Although standardisation and an improvement in the intensity of approach lighting would be great, the ability to control the lights would be even better for a pilot with aging eyes (!) but I won't hold my breath for this!

I would think ideally this would be added as a built-in to the sim itself (those still being developed), rather than inside an add-on. Much more like the rw we all lust after.... Maybe LM and LR are listening :-)

 

....and if we're going whole-hog, the logic for variable-intensity shouldn't be that tough (agree standardization is the key!).

Oh and correct airport beacons, with correct visibility distances. And that goes for ALL lights.

Those are great tools.  They've got some limitations but you can do a lot with them.

Wish I had more time (that seems odd to say, being retired). It would be fun to get into the nuts and bolts.
