Xbox controller thumbstick problem

Recommended Posts

Hi, Hope someone can help me solve this frustrating issue with my Xbox Controller.

I’ve tried to set up my wireless controller with Chaseplane as per the fantastic demo on youtube by AirDailyX. I used this demo as it’s easy to understand as I’m no expert. I want to use the controller solely for Chaseplane camera views.

The problem is the right thumbstick behaves very erratic where it always returns to the original position when my thumb is released. But it also always snaps to a different position when panning around as well as when returning to the original position. Sometimes the new camera position could be anywhere different within the cockpit and I then have to use an assigned preset on my Joystick to return to a known camera position. It renders the right thumbstick pretty much unusable. This action doesn’t happen on the left thumbstick which behaves smoothly when I pan around and stays in the desired position when the thumbstick is released.

I’ve looked in the control assignments and nothing appears to conflict with it (at least i don't think it does) and I have calibrated the controller but it definitely spoils the ability to roam around cabin and the outside of the aircraft.

I’ve made a work around by assigning different keys on the controller to achieve the same objective making the right thumbstick redundant but it doesn’t feel natural and i would prefer to use both thumbsticks to move around the cockpit.

I have this issue in both P3dv3.4, my preferred sim, which is a pretty clean install with virtually no addons and FSX which makes me think it is either the Controller itself, a conflicting assignment or a setting I just don’t know about. I’m not using FSUICP but I would purchase if necessary if that would solve this issue. Grrrr!!

Sorry if this issue has been discussed previously, I’ve done a search but can’t locate this type of issue.

Can someone advise please?

Thanks

Jason

I'm assuming you are also using a joystick.

When you go into the FSX control settings are you making sure you have the XBox 360 selected as the controller?

Mine defaulted to the joystick which I hadn't noticed and all the Xbox settings were intact giving the same symptoms as you are describing.

Thanks for the reply. Yes i'm using a joystick and the Xbox controller within P3d.

In P3d it gives a checkbox option to use a controller or not. But it doesn't define individully for the Joystick or Xbox controller, It's  either both or none at all.

When i untick the controller checkbox, the Xbox controller works brilliantly as the way i want it to and as the demo by AirDailyX and has full functionality. But then my Joystick doesn't work and has no workable funtions like flaps/landing gear, throttle etc. So i have to turn it back on to fly the aircraft and leaves me back at square one and the initial problem of the right thumbstick.

I uninstalled FSX so don't know whether you can tick individual controllers or not. Another thing i don't have the option to calibrate the controller within the sim but i do with the Joystick. I calibrate the controller through Windows. I'm not sure if that's an issue.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Thats right in P3D It's  either both or none at all. You have to go to Button and Keys and the Xbox controller and delete all assignment for xbox controlls. I think they are in green. You dont have to delete the keybord assignments. If you have any assignmnents in the Axes tab for Xbox you have to delete them also

FSX will allow you to separate the two controllers so you can remove all the Xbox bindings but keep your joystick ones.

Sussed it!!

Thanks Guys. It took me a while but i had some Axis assignments still allocated on the Buttons tab for my Joystick which i didn't think mattered. Obviously they do!!

But it's all working perfectly now so thank you all for your help.

Thanks again

Jason
