Another IE Trojan Warning WinXP Sp2

Recommended Posts

For Those of you still using Internet Explorer, there is another trojan IE Exploit out there called "Phel"From:http://www.winplanet.com/article/2701-.htmDecember 30, 2004"Computers running Microsoft's Windows XP are vulnerable to Trojan attacks capable of remotely controlling a user's system even when equipped with the latest Service Pack 2 (SP2) patch, security firm Symantec has warned. The Trojan horse, called "Phel," is capable of corrupting computers visiting a malicious Web site through Internet Explorer's Help controls, according to Symantec. The program exploits a vulnerability within Internet Explorer and SP2 that engages help files from Web pages. The vulnerability was discovered in October.......A spokeswoman for the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant reports programmers are working to correct the vulnerability and will release the security update when the development and testing process is complete. A definitive time table as to when a patch might be issued has not been released."***************Or you can go Grab a better browser, IMHO.... :Dhttp://www.mozilla.org/firefoxHappy New Year,Joe :-outta****************Grab My FREEWARE Cessna 172 Voice recognition Profile here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]

with several hundred security leaks in Firefox discovered so far from what I hear it's a lot worse than IE...At least Microsoft makes an effort to solve problems, Netscape/Mozilla just tell you tough luck maybe in the next version.

"with several hundred security leaks in Firefox discovered so far from what I hear it's a lot worse than IE..."Proof please.Well then people should just keep using IE then, based upon your post, huh?Don't worry, Microsoft will protect you. :D NOT....."At least Microsoft makes an effort to solve problems,"Well, They did RELEASE A PATCH FOR MSFS2004 huh, so I guess they make an effort to fix things they screw up."Netscape/Mozilla just tell you tough luck maybe in the next version."Bwahahahahahahaha.....Some people will continue to enjoy IE, as FLAWED and security hole ridden as it is then...Besides, some people deserve their flaws. :-outtaBTW - read the First Posts again, I don't use the Mozilla Suite or Netscape, I use Firefox, you know you should research what you speak about before hitting the post message button. They are different Programs you know.So I guess you have problems with people being made aware of security flaws, huh. Yeah, we should just trust Microsoft, I don't think so.And last I read, over 8 million have downloaded Firefox 1.0.Have a Year ....,Sonar5PS - More on the Trojan here:http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/shows...p?storyid=56964http://www.cxotoday.com/cxo/jsp/article.js...2547&cat_id=90929 Stories here:http://news.google.com/nwshp?gl=&ned=us&ie...storyid%3D56964Oh Yeah, I went to Symantec, and searched for the following:http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/query.htmlInternet Explorer:68976 results found, top 500 sorted by relevanceFirefox:6 results found, sorted by relevance Nice try Jeroen, But I'm not believing what you say in your first post, at least mine is factual and based upon links and evidence. ****************Grab My FREEWARE Cessna 172 Voice recognition Profile here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=fs2004misc&DLID=58334]Cessna 172 Voice Profile[/a].You will need the main FREEWARE Flight Assistant program to use it, get it here:[a href=http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID=genutils&DLID=39661]Flight Assistant 2.2[/a]

Firefox is a product from the same people who brought us Mozilla which is based on the same code which is Netscape...I've tried it myself and abandoned it as a POS. Slow, takes up way too much screen realestate, etc. etc. etc.Yes there are potential problems with ALL browsers. Such is the nature of them. If people keep up with their updates though and use common sense they need not fear.I've been online since 1997 for hours a day, never got a single trojan or whatever infect my machines. Simply put, I don't do stupid things like visit sites to get cracks or use P2P software.I use common sense instead of hoping someone else will think for me and then blame someone at random when I get burned...

The fact is that there are far, far more people running IE than running FireFox. This means that it's far more effective to write something that exploits IE than that expoits FF, even if finding an FF exploit is easier. This probably means that there will always be more exploits for IE than for FF. However, far more worrying for users of FF is that only 72% of the KNOWN FF exploits have been closed by the Mozilla Foundation. This means that 18% are out there, known about by hackers and the malicious, but there is NO fix or patch. (And you can read all about that stat at the Secunia site if you choose)This is a simple balancing act for users. Yes, there are more people seeking to exploit IE, but when they succeed, there are more people at MS to get a patch out. Less people looking for FF errors, but when they succeed, there's less people to try to find a fix.Richard
