A month has passed and I am still amazed

I've got my Rift for over a month now and really, everytime I fly in Aerofly FS 2, really every single time, I can't help being amazed and in awe of what I see. The feeling of actually being there keeps on making my jaw drop. Yes, you do get used to the 3D effect in the cockpit, just like you do get used to 3D in real life LOL, but still, the immersion... I just did a flight from a high altitude airport to a lower one and at one moment I passed a mountain ridge and saw a truly immense valley in front of me, with mountains on the side in the far away distance and the setting sun was shining... I mean... seriously... I WAS THERE! It didn't LOOK immense, it WAS immense! But even less inspiring areas and circumstances look so real when I look down out of my Cessna (a plane which I never liked but which has become my favorite in AFS2). The mountains, the fields, heck, even the flat city textures (which I used to HATE in other sims) look so cool...! (BTW Generic textures are a thing of the past for me: when you are 'really out there' generic textures simply don't cut it anymore: the extremely realistic diversity of photoreal textures, flat as they may look here and there, ups the immersion factor with a few 100 percent and generic textures can never ever show you all that photoreal shows you. Generic textures are so extremely limited... I can't even imagine anymore liking them in FSX, P3D and XP!)

Anyway, just wanted to say that the Rift and Aerofly FS 2 are a match made in heaven and the best investment ever (when it comes to (sort of) 'flightsim related hardware'). Not a flight goes by without me thinking 'WOW'. I can't stop shaking my head in disbelief that I am really experiencing this. It is the best experience by far. A dream come true. Incredible.

I was thinking something similar today. I've been messing around a lot with Flyinside, but as you said, autogen has kind of lost its lustre. My hope is that Orbx can provide the missing low level details with some sort of OSM based building placement, supplemented with lots of lovingly hand-placed landmarks. At that point I expect to be a very happy camper whose currently closed wallet will open again to new scenery purchases.

Oh, and Sesquashtoo, is that you? What have you done with J van E?!

AeroFly should allow VR users to eject from the aircraft. That would probably be fun.

This imagination is so incredible, I can't stop laughing!
But I suppose, the risk of heart attacks is just too high.

This is the idea of the year 2017 for flight sim VR!

I'm still patiently waiting for 4K VR sets - I refuse jumping back to 1080p sets!

If I can I really want to spank Palmer Luckey the Oculus founder for forcing me to endure this long torture of waiting and waiting and waiting...

Excellent post J van E , it is so difficult to adequately express the wonders  of flying AFS2 with the rift but your post will be very inspiring to non-VR users. I just hope that many more people will soon be able to join us lucky enthusiasts and experience real, I mean VR, flying.

I am sorry but I doubt I will join you guys anytime soo, despite I like AF2. I invested a few thousands of Euros into a hardware panel (XTOP with all Saitek gear including 9 FIPs) over the years which I am in *love* with. I doubt I'll throw this away for goggles, as amazing as they will be.

Just saying, nothing you've to worry about.

Kind regards, Michael

That is a shame as I also have invested many thousands of pounds in an Emuteq  G1000 panel, which is amazing for flight training purposes. However you can never experience the true joy of flying with this configuration, VR will not replace this setup but will enable you to really experience flying as if it is real. Try it out if you can first but I am sure you will be hooked once you try it.

Jv, while flying around today, just grinning ear to ear, I can't help but feel that Aerofly is going to be knocking a lot of people's socks off, soon.

Wait.

Just wait!! :gaul:

It's not a big secret, I'm just extrapolating what has already been shown over at Orbx: I'm talking about the potential of Ipacs photoscenery autogen.

For me, and I think a lot of people, the great weakness of photo scenery has always been its flatness. You yourself have mentioned this as possibly your main dislike in Aerofly: the flatness once you leave the main DLC city areas.

Now, I believe Ipacs might (probably does) have a game-changer, allowing the creation of VERY "plausible" cityscapes that complete the promise of orthophotos.

Think of Tonywobs stuff on steroids.

Take a look at JV's photos of Innsbruck, and imagine a day when scenery designers with access to enough data can build sprawling (accurate seeming) urban and suburban landscapes of the type we have never seen before.

Now couple that with Aeroflys Framerates and a few years more of additional systems modeling......

Or...... maybe I'm just on crack!

But I now think there are only two civilian sims out there with the ability to legitimately call themselves Next-gen, and that's Aerofly and X-Plane.
