Prepar3d v4

Recommended Posts

I don't even understand why is there a belief that the current pricing and licensing of v1, v2 and v3 won't continue for v4. Only because 64bit was (more or less) announced, doesn't make it a different simulator. It's just another feature, really nothing more than any other feature in P3D. That it's so much worth to us, is one thing, but most likely that commercial vendors, which probably don't even use ORBX, UTX, PMDG, FSL etc, will never run into limits of a 32bit sim. And even if they do, they will push the slider down and be done with it. It's only us who cry about higher LOD, more trees and sharper high-resolution textures.

Seems quite certain 64bit will be available to all intended markets not just commercial military & space. There are comments from orbx and AS that elude to P3d v4 64bit and they have the beta. If there was no intention to make available to public sector, our devs wouldn't even be bothered with it.

Who's to say that these developers don't market their work to commercial clients?  They don't have to feel obliged to tell the public that information, and they do have the right to sell their products commercially, which can always lead to bigger profits.  Unless you are an investor who gets monthly reports of profitability and market shares, as well as sales to clients, we are generally in the dark about the full scope of a developer's business practice.  It wouldn't surprise me in the least, that companies like ORBX, or even PMDG wouldn't be peddling their wares to commercial clients.

A few years back I specifically remember JV talking about scenery development for a commercial client.

I don't think you can come to any "certain" conclusions about 64bit availability based on what some developers have "eluded to". We also can suspect that ORBX and AS have their hands on the AeroFly simulator as well which is 64bit, but nothing certain there either.  I think most of the evidence we've seen on the subject is pretty much useless, and the reason for this big secret is really puzzling.

As a developer, I can only elude to what an incredible waste of time and money, personnel and client morale, it would be to go to 64bit only to continue to support the 32bit version to be forced on your most enthusiastic and helpful users.  Prepar3d is one of the facets of Lockheed PR.  Make no mistake about it, making a top notch simulator available to the kidz with your brand on it as it relates to your highest end products as well is a "No Brainer' ... does not require much thought.  Prepar3d is good business.  Not to mention it actually is a professional certifiable simulator platform.  is it that we are not having any more to discuss?

I had a conversation with a rep at Redbird and they use the P3D default scenery and say it's sufficient for VFR navigation training. Also found it interesting that they use P3D version 1.4 in all of their FAA certified full motion simulators; no rush to update them either. They have testing of version 3 in progress but updating the software means FAA re-certification so it takes time.

I think a 64 bit version would be great. In fact I would probably bite the bullet and start using it. I won't pass up a simulator that is striving for new ground. I also don't think there is much truth in these articles and I would say that we're not anywhere close to confirming a 64bit version yet. I think it's safe to say version 4 will arrive at some point, but that's it.

It's legit, no dead links on the page.  I recall they had a beta page for v3.

Given leaked reports it's been in beta for many months now. Just not for "us".

Hi All,

The one huge benefit that Lockheed Martin gains from this community is a huge supply of "free" testing resources. I worked for a small company a number of years ago that provided testers to a large printer company. We were paid well for testing the printers firmware, and the printer software that ran on the PC. In addition to us USA based testers, the bulk of the testing resided off shore. Nevertheless, it was a sizable business expense the printer company had to absorb.

Good testing is time consuming and expensive, and the broader the user base, the better. In LM's case, not only is the testing free, but the testers actually have to pay for the product as well, plus they are very enthusiastic about the software. So Lockheed Martin is getting a great deal, because there are some really smart, savvy individuals who provide valuable feedback about P3D to LM. The community as a whole, really wants the product to be successful.

So we should not undersell ourselves as not being valuable component to the development of P3D.

Bill Clark

All very well said Bill.

I have suggested the same thing myself in the past numerous times.
